Random Shave Off Report

Figured I’d start a page where we can post all of the random shave offs we do. They’ve helped me pick some winners in the past and it could be useful to have them consolidated onto one page. Rules are simple, post what you learned. No need to bash one razor over another or grade anything unless you want to.

Today I did a shave off with a WR1 .80 DC in brushed satin finish vs a WR1 .86 in matte finish. Both using only the SB side. Both with 1st use treet platinum blades. Soap was talbot marlogue wood. Aftershave was maol Marlogue wood.

WTG pass: I got a bit more blade feel from the .80 than the .86.

XTG pass: still got a bit more blade feel than the .86.

ATG pass: for some reason, this is where I got similar feeling blade feel. But this is also the pass that usually catches most of my hair.

I’ve heard from numerous folks that with the WR1, the higher you go in gaps, the smoother it gets. This became true for me today. But I enjoy more blade feel than less. It’s hard to explain it because you would think the .86 has more blade feel but something about increasing the gap span gives the feeling of reduced blade feel. The carbon passaround comes to mind. I found the .68 plate to be the best for me. It has the most blade feel out of all the plates. As you go up in gaps with the carbon plates, the blade exposure reduces and gives you a “smoother” feeling shave in terms of blade feel. For me, I like that blade to skin contact. I enjoy feeling where I’m at on my skin and feeling the hairs being cut. I don’t think the finishes have anything to do with the shave as they are fairly similar.

This is day 3 of shaving with these razors and while both very smooth, they both demand your time and full concentration. I have to go slow with them and be careful. Haven’t gotten any irritation out of the norm from 3 days use so far. When I first got the .80, I used a personna med prep and found that I needed to dial back to a less aggressive blade if I was going to use it for daily shaving.

All in all, I only plan on keeping one of these so I will be spending some more time with them in the comming days to try and decide which to keep. Bottom last pic has .80 on the right. Happy shaves y’all!

That’s the comparison I was waiting for. Thank you very much. My name should come up for my second Wolfman razor and it will be a Wr1. My first one is Wr2 DC 1.25SB/1.45SB and I regret a bit that I didn’t go for a full 1.45 or 1.55. 1.25 is a bit mild for me. Now I hesitate between wr1 .80 and .86, in both cases DC sb/oc same gap on both sides. I need a daily shaver. Keep us informed about which one works better for you

Excellent review, I do agree as WR1 gap increases the shave is smoother but more efficient. I have a .74 DC and a .94 DC both great razors but the .94 is smoother

If you like the results of a 1.45 and a 1.25 just isn't enough, an 80 or an 86 either one will likely be a little underwhelming. On my face, a 94 is close to a 1.35, with more blade feel, and probably about the same smoothness.

I think the WR1 does pick up a little efficiency with the OC, so, I would get the full OC head.

Personally, I think you should go 1.65...or see if he will do a 1.75. The 1.65SB is crazy good.

Thank you very much Shavemd and Loot. BTW now is the perfect time to experiment with a wr2 1.75 with the masks covering the sliced face lol

Whisker_whacker i believe you said that shave off was with both SB sides only? If I got that correct, have you tried both OC sides and the same shave off of sorts?

I may try that out at one point. I do agree that the WR1 OC side is quite comfortable but LOOT lended me a WR1 .86 OC a while ago and after 3 straight days of using it some i got some unwanted irritation. Due to military I have to shave daily and in my mind suffer from tooth comb distraction. I tend to concentrate on the teeth more when using an OC side and can’t feel the blade as well as with an sb side. I believe due to daily shaves I get a better suction from the guard on sb that brings the skin closer. But I sometimes use the OC for my WTG first pass and like having that option. If I was able to shave every other day or less often I could see myself using the OC more.

I've only done a couple.  One more planned for tomorrow, and quite a few more on the to-do list for this year. I'll try to remember to add the videos here when I do them.
