Another taste of humble pie this morning. Shave went great, one of my best to date actually, until I decided to get my neck super close on a clean-up pass like I just did on my chin. Went ATG, used too much pressure apparently; and, Total disaster, cheese grater city! red bumps and irritation on the side of my neck.
What ingredients are best at assisting with this?

Hi Brent, there are products that will help- witch hazel, balm etc. but my best recommendation would be to take the weekend off and let it heal. We have all been there and the best remedy IMHO is time.

Kevin (kwsher) is spot on, in my opinion.  However, if a total rest cannot be in the cards then I definitely recommend his suggestion of witch hazel.  Splash it on as you would an aftershave splash.  It may very well soothe the irritation until it can heal.

Brent, I feel your pain!

+1 to what kwsher wrote and also try using a glycerine based pre-shave bar... apply before lathering up as a preventative measure for when you're feeling blade-happy.

This has, and still works wonders for me.

I always have both an alcohol based aftershave splash and a "lotion" type balm on hand. The splash for when I have had a irritation free shave and the balm for when I get a little irritation. Usually the balm has oils, vitamins, etc to help heal and the irritation quickly vanishes. No matter how "seasoned" a shaver you are, inevitably, going to have a less than perfect shave, and for those times, the balms work wonders (for me anyway Smile ) Just my .02

If you have witch hazel and an aftershave splash, you could use one after the other. WH to mitigate the irritation, then the aftershave splash to "burn it away". I've found sometimes an alcohol splash can really burn an irritated area when you first put it on, but after that the irritation goes away. YMMV though, so the WH first might act to reduce any burning from the alcohol splash.
