do you use a pre-shave oil or cream and does it make any difference for your shaves?

I like to use pre shaves. Many work very well for me, but my current favorite is Myrsol Emulsion. You can get PSO samples from Maggard's or others, and Proraso is inexpensive to try and works well too.

I've only tried a pre-shave oil a couple of times. But I didn't really notice any difference which may be due to my inexperience. I will admit though that the one I have (Art of Shaving - Sandalwood) has a fantastic scent.

I've used some sort of pre-shave cream for the past 10 years. Be it Proraso, Prep or Vitos. I find that it helps the first pass go MUCH more smoothly.

I like using a pre-shave treatment. I have used Proraso and several oils, both commercial and homemade, but I finally settled on CeraVe glycerin moisturizer, a little dab of which seems to work the best for me, softening but rinsing off easily and not affecting the blade at all.

Pro tip: Make your own. AOS is nothing more than olive and castor oils plus sandalwood essential oil. Make enough for a lifetime for the cost of one bottle.

+1 for jmudrick 's comment.

I make my own and it is significantly better than a pre-shave oil I purchased that had great reviews.

My recipe is different, though I'm sure there are plenty of ways to skin this cat. I use 4 parts olive oil to one part mineral oil. It works really well. Essential oils are a nice touch.

No, I don't.

I have only purchased one so denominated pre-shave oil, and that was from T&H No 10 series, bought along with the matching cream. Funnily, I find that it improved the performance of that specific cream, but no others. I am not sure if I have any soaps or creams from series with pre-shave oils, but could it be that those which do, indeed are meant to be used in combo?
