Fortunately, I live in the Chicago suburbs about 45 miles from downtown. Shootings are pretty rare here. The Village I live in has microphones set up all over town. If a gun is fired, the microphones will pick up the sound and the police can triangulate the source very quickly and respond in a timely manner. They can also use it to respond when people set off illegal fireworks as some of my neighbors are prone to do.

I used to visit downtown Chicago to go to zoos, museums, etc. However, since it has become unsafe even to drive on the freeways, I have not been to the city in several years. Besides anything purchased in Chicago cost a fortune in sales taxes.

How dangerous is it?  I have to drive to Milwaukee next month and typically go through Chicago.

Well, since they don't honor out of state concealed weapon permits and with an astronomical murder rate I'd never go there and haven't since 1986. But, I admire the pioneer spirit. You know, the innocent emigrant venturing into the West........and getting scalped.  Smile
Secretary Ramsey put his foot into it yesterday . . . in the course of his remarks he said that California “needs water and better society.”  “So does h-ll,” yelled someone in the crowd.

The crime rate in Chicago, especially shootings, has gotten so bad that Mayor Lightfoot has asked the Feds for assistance in combating crime. There were 4 killed and 19 wounded in shooting this past weekend. Even yesterday, a Tuesday, there was 1 killed and 5 wounded.

Of course, at the same time, Mayor Lightfoot is in a battle with the Chicago Police Union over COVID vaccine mandates. Approximately 1000 CPD officers will leave the force this year due to retirements and resignations. Several officers have been stripped of police powers because they refused to reveal their vaccination status.

Over 175 people have been shot driving along the various expressways in Chicago during 2021. That is only a small percentage of the total vehicle traffic though on the expressways, but it is still concerning. If you are driving from Michigan or Indiana, I would suggest taking the Tri-State Tollway rather than driving through downtown.

Transitory rate hikes. Transitory crime waves. No worries. Cake?
