I enjoy a good soap as much as anyone . Ease of lather, cushion, and slickness (primary and secondary) are important to me.  I see many people commenting on the post-shave properties of soaps.  Isn't that what aftershave splash and balm is for?  All that I ask of a soap is that it is not terribly drying.  In no way is the use of a soap alone satisfactory for my post shave.

So, now that I have gotten that off my chest, what is your post shave routine?  Do you use an aftershave splash, balm, or both?  What are some of your favorite products?

I like a alcohol based splash (preferably with a touch of menthol) followed by a balm.  My favorites are Myrsol Blue splash and Pre de Provence balm.  That combination is a great post shave for me.

Your turn...

I alcohol based aftershave, which I make.

I also use aftershave balm, which I also make. My balm has 10% lanolin.

Unrefined Shea butter after the shave. I feel it takes care of any damage I did shaving. After it absorbs in I apply my cologne.

After every shave, I take the lather that's left on my ears and wherever and rub it over the shaved area to get that glycerin going on.  With my face wet, I apply not only my favorite post shave product, but the one I use after every shave.

I wash off any of the alum with cold water and then apply a balm. If I use a splash, I'll still put a little balm on after. I have to have the balm or my face will dry out. In the summer when it's really hot, I might cut it with some water.

I always use an aftershave and I prefer those with Alcohol as well as a touch of Menthol in the Summer. My skin usually isn’t dry except on occasion in the Winter, in which case I’ll use a Moisturizer in addition to a Splash.

Some of my very favorite Aftershaves are those by Chatillon Lux and Barrister and Mann Reserve.

My skin sometimes feels a little dry after a shave, and a simple alcohol-based aftershave splash won’t help with the feeling. However, I’ve somehow ended up with a large amount of alcohol-based splashes, anyway. So…

My current routine:
• After rinsing the soap off the face and neck, leave the skin damp.
• Place a small amount of unscented balm in the palm of the hand.
• Follow up with a splash of choice, and quickly mix the balm and the splash in the hands.
• Rub the mixture over entire face and neck.

I’d like to hear what a skin specialist would have to say about mixing a balm and a splash together like that, but for me, it seems to work. I get to enjoy the splashes that I love, yet I also feel like my skin is hydrated and nourished because of the balm in the mix.

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

For me it’s a couple rinses with cold water, then most of the time an alcohol-based splash. Sometimes a balm, if I know it’s going to be cold and/or windy out.

My post follows this. Hot towel x 2 to wipe of excess soap and clear out pores. Cold rinse from the tap followed by Proraso Green splash. Once rinsed out brush ready to top off witha quality after shave balm. Skin is clear soft and refreshed.

I tend to buy complete set of soap + A/s or balm mostly. For me too, the ritual is incomplete if it doesn't end with something to top the shave.
