In ancient Chinese folklore the legendary Paladin Dragon was the fiercest of all Dragons and was the last of its kind. As written Dragons kept to themselves and never attacked anyone or anything unless they sensed danger in which they would burn, destroy the threat.
For over 200 years the Paladin along with his mate and offspring lived quietly, unmolested by humans in a beautiful, fertile remote part of China surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers and streams far away from civilization. But that changed in time as people came to farm those fertile lands, small villages sprang up, roads were built and with it came greed, crime, and war.
The Paladin along with his family would come out of their cave to fly, play, and hunt every month. As the population grew the dragons were often noticed in which fear quickly spread throughout the countryside. This fear gave way to the forming of hunting parties that set out to kill the Dragons.
It was one of those hunting parties that discovered the Dragons cave while they were out and laid in wait for them to return so as to kill them. When the Mother and baby returned the hunters managed to kill them but not the Paladin he was still hunting. When the Paladin returned and discovered his family dead he flew into a rage and set siege to all the nearby villages destroying them and all their inhabitants

It was around 1135 that the news of the village’s destruction came to the Emperors (Song Dynasty) attention in which he sent the famous Chinese warrior General Yue Fei to hunt and kill the last remaining Dragon. The General went with one hundred soldiers and within 2 months of searching found the Paladin and gave battle. When this epic battle ended only the General and Paladin were left. As they faced each other for the final combat the General laid down his weapon and spread out his arms, the Dragon approached breathing fire towards the skies, then put his face inches from the General, roared upwards then turned sideways and indicated to the general to get onto its back. The general climbed on, and the Dragon flew upwards towards the heavens.

No one knows why the Dragon did this but from that moment on the Dragon became the general’s protector. Whenever the general went into battle the Dragon was by his side. This bewildering relationship lasted until the general’s death in Jan of 1142 in which he was executed by the Emperor for political purposes, deceit leveled by powerful political rivals.
It was at the general’s arrest that he indicated to the Dragon not to come to his rescue. As legend has it, from that day forward to the day the general was executed, the Paladin took to the skies nightly and from miles around the villages could hear his cries. When the general was finally put to death the Paladin was never seen again.
