Old Old Spice?

OK, so I took a walk over to my favorite local antique shop today. I've picked up 5 or 6 straights from there, plus my Super Speed, so I pop in every couple of weeks, just to see if they've gotten anything new.

Today, I saw a really cool Old Spice decanter, shaped like a telescope. Nice and heavy, an...What's this? it's not empty. I open it to take a sniff and I am immediately hit that longed for scent of original Shulton Old Spice. Today's Old Spice doesn't even come close to the mark that Shulton Inc. made with Old Spice back in the day.

I check the bottom, and sure enough, there is a sticker marked Shulton, Inc. on the bottom.





My guess is that this stuff is as old as I am, or close to it. Probably late 70s early 80s I would think?

My question is...should I use it? It's pretty close to half full, judging by feel and slosh. It's a true decanter in that the top does not screw on, it is a plug. It seats tight, and doesn't leak with tilting, and it smells absolutely fantastic...JUST like I remember my dad wearing back in the day...

Anybody have any input or insight as to the usability of 35 year old aftershave? I may just put a dab on each wrist and see how it goes....

I splashed a bit on my wrists and the back of my neck, and it smells absolutely wonderful!

I'm going to use it after my next shave...which is feeling like it should be any minute now...

Heck yeah, I would use it! I know primotenore and churchilllafemme use vintage aftershaves all the time.

Heck yeah, I would use it. There are several of us that have shaved with soap somewhere between 50 and 100 years old. I would expect alcohol based after shave to last forever.

I'd suggest using it. However, these old aftershaves can develop a precipitate that appears as black particles. If you see any of those in your hand when you pour it, filter the aftershave in the decanter through a coffee filter into a bowl. Rinse out the empty decanter with distilled water. Then pour the aftershave from the bowl back into the decanter, using a funnel if necessary.

I'm so amazed that alcohol can survive this long. I'm more surprised that it even retains the intended scent.

Thanks for the advice! I had a nice midday shave today and I finished off with this splash. No visible impurities, and it had an absolutely wonderful post-shave conditioning feel to it. P&G has failed on every front when it comes to Old Spice. I just wish I could get more of this stuff, now!
