My tip for a bowl is check the local Goodwill type thrift stores. I've found a lot of cool vessels I've used for shave bowls both steel and ceramic. Have fun! Also there is a fella on Etsy that sells beautiful ceramic shave bowls for really great prices. Dougsmithpottery is the store name.

Heck, you don't ned a bowl at all. Lots of us face lather. It has some advantages... It conditions the whiskers as you lather, and any water added gets immediate feedback. I have bowl lathered exactly twice. The first time when I got my kit, and about a month later. I was in "lather withdrawal" for the entire day and I haven't revisited bowl lathering since. But if you insist on "bowl lathering" the weak hand makes for a pretty decent bowl and costs nothing. It even comes with ridges.

+1

I started out bowl lathering, but once I started face lathering I was hooked. That was a wet shaving epiphany for me. While I do shave after I shower, face lathering has been the best whisker prep that I've found. And, the brush feels really good on the face!
