I don't have mine yet, but I'm not a fan of dirt scents, so I'm nervous now.

The aftershave has rather short longevity (an hour or two).

I've seen two people dump theirs (unused) already. If you don't like dirt, hmm... How about petrichor? Scents like Summer Storm, La Tierra Humeda, La Tierra Mojada, Petrichor, etc. It's got some ozone, more so in the aftershave but the rain note simply adds to the dank wetness.

At any rate, you'll have no problem moving it on if it's not for you.

There must be some batch variation. There is not "wet earth" vibe in my tub. I am not a fan of the earth smell AT ALL. Rather, I find the scent as described by whollykaw. It is a pleasant aquatic scent with a bit of smokiness from the birch tar. The scent strength is a 4/10. Overall I find it very pleasant.

I just finished my first shave with Tempest. The scent is subtle and relatively light. It does open up as the lather develops. I can't put my finger on the different scent notes but it is definitely not my favorite! More earthy then a scent of the sea. I do smell a rotting damp earth to it. Performance was fantastic as with all WK soaps. I did experience more irritation during and after the shave than I have had with any other soap.

I also received the AS. There is a lot of menthol in this one gentlemen! WOW! Especially felt this with the irritation! This said, the AS was very healing and left my skin feeling great!

I may have to give the Tempest combo a few more uses before make my final decision but it ain't looking good...

Some people are more sensitive to "dirt" (it can be smelled in parts per trillion) so maybe that has something to do with it. Mine's definitely more earth than sea!

I smelled what Mark does, “It is a pleasant aquatic scent with a bit of smokiness.” As Wholly Kaw intended.

There's no way it smells aquatic unless you focus on the ozone, or go by a fresh application of the aftershave where the menthol brightens it up momentarily.

Here's my in-depth review of Tempest.

Everybody's nose is different. You can't say definitively "This is what this smells like! Period, the end." It may (and obviously does) smell different to somebody else. This happens all the time in this hobby. Other than that, great review.

You're right; obviously people's noses are different (and to that end, I took out one word; "period.")... But from what I've seen so far, the majority are leaning towards earth rather than sea. It only makes sense, given the notes. Those leaning towards sea either don't smell the dirt at all or consider the scent very weak... So I suspect some just don't register it.

I have not smelled it, but it seems weird that the scent came out more towards the earth/petrichor realm rather than "sea" given the name and artwork on the label.
