Opera on public radio this morning, because they are having their fall donation drive and were giving away during the hour a CD set of opera performances, as a thank you gift for a certain donation level. Although I admire the talent and expression and sheer beauty of the singers' voices, the story lines of operas have never interested me, and the music just doesn't move me emotionally as instrumental classical music does.

Giacomo Puccini: La Bohème: Che gelida manina
Herbert von Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic; Luciano Pavarotti, tenor

Léo Delibes: Lakmé: Viens, Mallika (Flower Duet)
Richard Bonynge/Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra; Joan Sutherland, soprano; Jane Berbié, mezzo-soprano

Giacomo Puccini: Tosca: Vissi d'arte
Herbert von Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic; Leontyne Price, soprano

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro, K.492: Dove sono
Georg Solti/London Philharmonic Orchestra; Kiri Te Kanawa, soprano

Giacomo Puccini: Turandot: Nessun dorma
Zubin Mehta/London Philharmonic Orchestra; John Alldis Choir; Luciano Pavarotti, tenor

Opera arie lose all impact when heard out of context in a vacuum. However, within the given work, the emotional effect is simply magic. Big fan here

I love many kinds of music. But I am afraid to listen to music while shaving. What if I start head banging to Metallica?! or getting worked up with Beethoven's Fifth symphony? Or make many small cuts to the Barber of Seville?? (now be honest, can you listen to that last piece and NOT see Bugs on Elmer's head??!! Tongue   Happy )

Looney Toons was my gateway to classical. In fact, the only time I ever won anything back in the "Call in and be the nth caller" was in 1989 or 1990. I actually won tickets to see the Warner Brothers orchestera in an outdoor venue near Indianapolis. What I didn't know was that they would be playing classic cartoons on a big screen while performing the "hits" from classical and operatic pieces. And the audience was wonderful mix of young and old, all enjoying the music and the laughs.

Back to shaving and music now

Although I didn’t shave today I was fooling around re-arranging soaps, installing an overhead light above my brushes in the cabinet, listing what razors need stands, which razors haven’t been touched, what to PIF, what to donate, painted, cooked (for 5) and finally, DFS-ing

Here were some of the music highlights…..
