I want to make a joke about decaf but I can't find it!

However, at one time I was drinking too much coffee. I scaled back by mixing my own 50:50 beans. Once I was doing better, I went back to full real coffee! Just drink a smaller amount now.

I was working and swinging between 12 on and 12 off every 3 days with 3 days off between and I was drinking so much coffee on my first day off after nights that it was upsetting my GI tract. So I got off that rat race and decided to change jobs.

It's been decades since I drank appreciable caffeinated coffee, but I do drink caffeine. In the AM I drink a grain beverage (CafLib) and today I got in some chicory to try that. I did try a first mug of chicory today and it's really good! But it takes 10-15 minutes to steep at a simmer. CafLib is instant. I like instant a lot more. I'll give the chicory a fair test. Now if CafLib added chicory "juice" to their mix they'd have a real winner.

I go for quality not quantity. I have one very good cup of black coffee in the morning and then no more. No other bought coffee can compare and would only serve to diminish the experience. If I meet friends for coffee later in the day I’ll have a decaf milk based drink that’s not really coffee. I never got into the habit of drinking large quantities of bad office coffee.

One test chicory brew (granules) came in yesterday. And I tried it immediately. OK, so with that test I learned not to follow their directions. I could stand the spoon up in it, way too strong for me. I used half the amount this AM and it was better than my normal grain beverage, more coffee-like in taste. But what a bother to make! Simmer it for 10-15 minutes. In the AM that's too time consuming. Maybe I'll make a bunch of it store it in the refrigerator and pour it out as I need it and nuke it to warm it.

Taste? It lacks the acidic bite of coffee beans. Not exactly a bad thing for me. I always tried to remember to add a bit of sodium carbonate to reduce that anyway.

I like it I just need a better way to use it in the AM and also to fine tune the amount to use.

I can never do coffee in the afternoon either, I know folks that have coffee at like 4 and 5pm and I just don't get it... keeps me awake if I have something at 2!
