MntnMan62 I'm sure you cherish those moments with your son.  We don't get much in the jazz line around here so I listen to lots of recordings.  I used to go with my son to various drum clinics.  I still remember his reaction after the Steve Smith clinic, he was blown away by the talent.  I reminded him that Steve had been doing this for near on 50 years.  Another memorable clinic was a tabla clinic which expanded our understanding of rhythm beyond western music.  Steve Smith also discussed tabla and rhythm and how, before you could play it you must be able to say it.  This guy explains it pretty well:

I grew up listening to Steve Smith play on Jean Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean and his own band Vital Information and lots of other albums like Tom Coster's Ivory Expedition. He's first and foremost a jazz guy and was amazing to see at NYC's Iridium jazz club. And your mention of tabla drumming reminds me of also listening to John McLaughlin's Shakti albums. Some great stuff and a rhythmic wonderland. As Frank said, music is the best.
