I have been shaving with the general,my first aluminum head I have ever used. I put a SS handle on it because I like heavy razors. It is a very close shave, and I don't know if its the aluminum head or just the razor but it just about has me wanting to sell off my oneblade, which is what I was getting my closest shaves with for the last year. Do you guys think its the aluminum head that has an effect on the closeness?

I think it's probably the head and blade geometry more than anything. A lot of people refer to the general as being mild and I'd probably agree but my 1st pass is definitely closer in the general than in my as-d2 or fat handled tech.

Paolo, this is very helpful. Good to hear from someone who has used the M1 for a while!

I don’t think it’s necessarily the aluminum, per se, but probably a combination of the right weight, geometry and angle. I have a Mongoose and an AlumiGoose, so basically the same head in stainless and in aluminum, and I enjoy them both but the shaves are quite different between them. Colonial Razors will be releasing a brass version of The General later this year, so you could always try that and see how it compares to the aluminum. Smile

Although I don’t have the Calypso, I own and have used a few different aluminum razors, and I they have all been decent to great razors with zero issues during the time I’ve had them. I’m glad Stan decided to start offering aluminum razors, and I wish more high-end manufacturers would do the same, because it does bring the cost down, and the razors are usually very enjoyable.

Absolutely! Also (as you already know), it’s a good idea to try whatever different handles you may have, as those can alter the experience quite a bit. Sometimes it can be nice to have a light razor, other times some added weight makes for a welcome change of pace.

I might just review it once I get it and have a few shaves on it in our new review system that should be released today. Tongue

regardless of how it shaves (I have high hopes for it), it's a beautiful looking razor. I love the contrasting bottom cap too.

Just pulled the trigger on the R1 last week. I kept hearing about the R1 but the $185 price tag was holding me back (although I own and love the s1). The aluminum version is almost half price so it made sense for me to try it out. I was going back and forth about M1 or R1 head, I also have sensitive skin with course hair. At the end of the day very mild razors don't work that well for me, I don't like doing too much cleanup, so I figured the R1 would work better. Worst comes to worse, ATT allows you to exchange base plates if need be.
