Anyone here using a Karmisori ?

I have only found reasonable prices on the UK Ebay and none of the western variants.

The traditional has two faces as a golf club does, for shaving ones self, this is a bit akward due to the "ura" side of the blade always facing away from the face.

A western variant of this would be similar to a normal straight razor but without scales and a long handle which in reality is really a counterbalance.

I would like to know if anyone knows where to find any ?

Rasurpur has some Western style ones and they are excellent. I use a Japanese style one too and shave with both Ura and Omote side (I'm not that flexible I can shave my left cheek with my right hand behind my left ear comfortably) and while that may not be acceptable for the purists it causes no issues for me, in fact I prefer to shave with the Ura side.

I have one that I use occasionally. I have a hard time getting it to take an edge, so it has sat unused for a while. Mine is traditional so the grind is asymmetrical. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong as far as sharpening it goes, I just can't seem to put a good edge in it.

I'm not quite ready to give up in it just yet though.

If you are serious about a traditional style, asymmetrical kamisori, check out JapaneseNaturalStones.com. Maksim has some old and some new and also some gorgeous western style, Japanese made straights that are just breathtaking. The prices are too steep for my budget but if you've got the funds he's got the goods...

I am an old man and getting brittle, all that gymnastics is out of my grasp. I figured the western style would be a better fit and also easier for a half blind guy to hone.

At this point Chris, I am more curious than anything. Because I have shaved while lounging in the tub many times, the one piece would be less maintenance and from what I have learned, western grind is easier to use and hone. One side of the normal ones are a different metal than the UMA side and require a different ratio of honing.

I have owned one myself for my entire life, my dad brought it home after the war in the Pacific. I never asked about its history and he was never of a mind to bring it up so it still resides in his old foot locker although he has been gone almost 20 years.

I have never thought of using it just due to the possible karma ... what is the time limit on that ?

I don't think Karma is transferable...
