IMHO, the Gillette handle with Power motion and FlexBall technology is a great option.
I've used with SkinGuard and Proglide cartridge, and It's perfect.
Specially for sensitive skin, as mine.

BUT, the Power system is very weak.
Today died, after about 30 uses.
From Feb 2015.
No good.

Given the circumstances, you probably did.

Was there any discussion of soap and post-shave products?

It sounds to me like you provided sound and thoughtful advice on the fly, on a subject that is not necessarily simple and straightforward, to a young man and his Mom about whom you were given little or no information. That’s not an easy thing to do. I’d say that Mom and her son were very fortunate to have happened upon you in the shaving section of the supermarket, given your background, interests, and experience. Well done Sir.

Looks like we are up to a Gillette Fusion 5 at this point...wonder how they work?  On that note, this Onion article from 2004 is totally spot on. I can't recommend it enough. Maybe one of the classic internet shaving stories ever.
