Gents (Soapers in Particular),

Has anyone tried to produce a modern top tier soap that replicates the discontinued I Coloniali Mango shave soap fragrance?

If not, why not, I would buy a ton of it in a modern top tier base, and splash!  I am sure others would as well!

Actually that base was and remains the slickest ever encountered. If a straight shaver, tough to beat to this day.

One of the absolutely best and most unique smelling as well!

I would be beyond happy to purchase the same fragrance in a current top tier/elite base, splash, EDP!!!

I mentioned this in one of my sotd videos last month or so that it is a huge surprise that it has not been duped in our community so far after all these years of it being nixed.

Maybe Frank Dragonsbeard or Irena of Ginger’s Garden could make a duplication of the scent? Irena has been making custom scents for a long time, and I believe Frank has started down that path, as well.

I still can’t quite fathom that i Coloniali was discontinued to begin with… Undecided

I’ve posted this same comment in other forums, but when it was discontinued no one wanted it. The remaining stock hung around for 9 months at regular prices on Amazon and a month or so longer at elevated prices. But you could buy refill pucks for $16-19 and the Rhubarb creams (same scent) for about the same. Apparently no one did very much.

When I made an Amazon order, I’d throw a refill or two in the cart, and occasionally a terracotta pot or balm. This went on as I’ve said, for many. many months. Same story for ABC hard soaps, you couldn’t give them away.

If I were an artisan looking at reproducing those sale numbers, I’d have a hard time convincing myself that a ‘run’ would sell enough to make it worth my while. If people didn’t buy the original after it was known to be discontinued, why would they buy a dupe? At least beyond one run?

I am in total agreement about the slickness and quality of the soap, and the balm is one of the best ever made, on par with ABC balms (and it doesn’t go bad). But the fact remains that the IC Mango/Rhubarb stuff just didn’t sell that well as far as I could tell.

Pre de Provence has a very similar lather and slickness if you want to experience it in an available base, but of course the scent is not the same. The company that makes PdP (PdP is a house brand of an American company) will make soaps for other people, so to me the logical choice is to get them to make a IC Mango scented version. It would be very close indeed.

Cheers, Steve

In looking back, the soap was very slick but it definitely lacked some cushion. A thin lather that was still very protective, which is likely why a lot of the straight razor guys liked it. Still a great performer for it's time but there are better soaps available now. The scent was definitely a love it or hate it scent. I remember the comparisons to fruit left in a sweaty gym sock. Personally, I did like the scent and I enjoyed the soap and aftershave quite a bit. I still have some of both. It's was a unique scent that's certainly not boring.

unfortunately I never did try any of the I Coloniali products.
