Living on the edge
With blades of solid pedigree like Platinums, Pols and GSB, Wizamet I get around a week of
good shaves...my Nacets start to turn after about 3 shaves.

I now believe in chucking a blade before its performance starts to flag.

Gillette says their latest cartridges are good for "a month of shaves" so I wonder if there
must be some new coatings that make this possible...a metallurgist would probably
know more. I've literally kept a cartridge going for six months or more...but only for occasional
use "here and there" Smile

If you just leave the blade in between days this might be important but if you break down your razor after each shave and wipe everything down and re-assemble for the next shave there's no need to worry about that...

When I was shaving with my vintage Gillette razors, I only used Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum blades. I routinely got 30 3-pass shaves out of each blade. Even if I felt a blade had more comfy shaves left I always started the month with a new blade. Having said this, it never occurred to me to not pull the blade out, rinse it off and pat it dry. I have some blade that the package says "Do Not Wipe" and I think, "Why not?" I just assumed everyone did that, but as I'm seeing in posts here and there that I must be in the minority on this subject. For some reason since I've switched to modern razors that same same 7 O'Clock Black only gives me a week or so of smooth shaves. So for about the past year or so I'm seven days and done. Still clean them up everyday.

Unless the blade is crap, 6 shaves per blade with 3 shaves per blade edge doing 5 pass shaves.

Reason behind not blades is if they are coated wiping can but not always remove the coating on the blade reducing how long the blade may potentially last. If the blade was sharpened after it was coated you could essentially ruin the blade edge right away instead of wearing it out slower through shaving.

That’s very subjective depending on blades how they are made? Quality of material etc..

I find vintage blades last a lot longer and can get roughly 5-8 Smooooth Shave out of each balde..

Some examples are:

PolSilver - Made in Poland 10 Shaves [Image: 25jrMDI.jpg][Image: Ncb6YC2.jpg]
Polsilver Brown Pack - Made in Poland last about 10-15 Shaves!
Astra Platinum Diu Keramik 15 Shaves at Ease![Image: notF31I.jpg]
Astra Superior Blue - Roughly about 8 smooth Shaves!

Give you some idea about each blade but again YMMV!!

Well, I use Feathers, Wizamets, PolSilvers, Nacets, Ninjas and a few others. NOW I'm also using Perma-Sharps which have turned out to be great blades. Now the Feathers I have noticed get maybe 3-4 shaves before becoming inefficient. The rest I have been able to log between 6-8 and maybe more. The Parma-Sharp I'm on the 5th shave and it's still doing well. I think I s/b able to clock at least 10 good shaves with most of my blades. At least that's what I'm going to aim for in a very uncontrolled testing manner. I also use the blades in different razors for each shave.

For years, when living in Vancouver, BC, I was consistently getting 10 shaves with Wizamet Super Iridiums, but since relocating to Edmonton, AB, I only get 5 shaves per blade.
The only variable that has changed is the water. Vancouver has the softest water I have ever encountered, whereas Edmonton, has very hard water. Therefore, I can only surmise that the greater mineral content in the water is degrading the blades. By the way, I have a very coarse beard, perform 2 passes XTG, ATG, with touch-ups and shave every day.

I found that interesting and appreciate you letting us know. Something to consider when people are comparing how many shaves they get but maybe from different areas with different water quality. Good to see you around again!
