Well as others have stated, you have to start somewhere. Most will start with beginner type razor usually that is the mild/medium category. But there are a boat of variable's that get lost in wind. Seems the spot light is always on the razor, like it is the magic wand. Every hear of...‘It’s not the wand, it’s the magician’. Not back to the variables, this is something the shaver should know. We have the shavers level of knowledge on how to properly shave. Which includes ( or certainly should) shave preparing (pre-shave, shaving practices & post shave. Then we have the face type and stubble type, directional grown pattern. Then the hardware and software. So basically just practice with a simple razor that you can control.
Also what a lot of good shavers do is, think of the target - what is to goal. To start, just go for a nice enjoyable shave with a good DFS (yep Damn Fine Shave). Again, going back to the shaving technic, do not over shave, do not over buff...light light pressure, let it glide..
Now I started off at 18 with straight. I am long long daily shaver. I use DE's during the week and weekends, I use a straight.
Honestly I can shave with almost anything. For DE's , normally use two. One Start, one Closer...I have a collection/rotation of slants for the Starters. Normally, one or two passes. Then I use a DE mild/med open comb /or sloc for a little clean up around the mouth. Results is usually a BBS
My quick blueprint is:
Face wash
My own pre-shave oil mix ( important - protects the skin)
Shave soap/croap/ or cream ( nothing expensive nor fancy - me I could care less about the top, middle or bottom notes)
After first pass, second & touch up, quick warm rinse, face stubble inspection for where to focus on> then I apply a mix of glycine, rose water, with a tad o tree oil to the face.
Once done, real good rinse, alum block, rinse again > good dry..
Face gets a combo (combined) of witch hazel, rose water, aloe > Once it sinks into the skin.
Light coat of vitamin E on the face > Once that sinks into the skin.
Cetaphil dry skin "face" moisturizer...done...
Then a final...wife inspection....lol
So I toss in some things that work for me.
yep the famous...YMMV
You need to find what works for you and I don't mean just the razor....
