I'm with Brian on this one - close the lid. Its funny with modern house designs bathrooms have been turned into spa/palaces and the toilet is right there without even a door. I grew up in an old house built in 1910 and the toilet was in its own little room the WC (water closet) and the tub/sink/vanity were in a separate room. I think thats as it should be. There were only two toilets in that house, the aforementioned WC and a toilet / sink combo on the main floor. Family of 7 and two toilets 1 bathtub. Fun - I listened to a podcast recently on the subject of gravestones (more interesting than you'd think) and one epitaph that stuck was "Raised Four Daughters in a House With Only One Bathroom and Still There Was Love."Smile

The greatest public health breakthrough in human history was the discovery of hand washing - and its amazing how many people either skip it entirely or do a token wash after defecating in a public toilet. My old boss to name one, his boss too. I'd have to pull a Jerry Seinfeld from the episode with Poppy the pizza making uncle of his then girlfriend.

We actually took the door out of the plans when we had our house built. Did it to make it easier to get my chair close but didn't realize what I was keeping in.

For those interested in the subject, Mythbusters did a show about this (with toothbrushes). If I remember correctly, their conclusion was that it didn't matter much - lid open or closed, brush in medicine cabinet or on counter. Even brushes they stored in a different room became contaminated.
