Gillette fatboy

The famous gillette fatboy....i still havent had the pleasure of trying one out.

Something that has always puzzled me is why this razor is so famous??? Why is it so expensive online from some private sellers. Some of which are selling for up to $200 bucks.

Ive tried so many razors from high end stainless to cheap to vintage DE’s and the only thing which changes for me is aggression. The DE shave is always the same....

Does the fat boy have something to offer which other DE’s don’t?

$200 for fatboy? maybe if its NOS or replated in rhodium, $100 will cost you a Fatboy in its original packaging and in almost new condition, used grade fatboy will cost you 30-50 bucks no packaging. I paid for mine $35

It changes both angle and blade gap.

There is nothing like it and likely will never be in terms of build quality and construction.

It can be worked on decades after it was made.

It’s parts are 100% interchangeable because of sophisticated progressive stamping.

Nothing holds a candle to it past or present if you are looking for a tto adjustable razor.

If not brass what is that beneath the plating on the Gibbs? Or is it brass but cast rather than stamped?

The Gibbs is brass. Yes it’s adjustable but 1) not TTO and 2) only changes blade gap 3) plastic handle.

Of course I’m fond of it but it’s a different razor than a fatboy all together.

Well of course. Not really a fan of TTOs myself, unnecessary complexity. The plastic handle is a real weakness of the Gibbs/Personna adjustables which is why I prefer the metal handled Gibbs №16. I don't imagine it will ever need to be worked on.

Excellent response from a man who knows the intricacies and has made a living off off of them decades after production ceased.  Razor Emporium..I'm interested in your opinion, I've been told by a couple of your counterparts that the nickle plating on the D3 and D4 series is "better" than any other.  Neither gentleman can give a concrete reason why but both were emphatic that given a choice in similar condition, take the D Series every time.  What say you?

OP...$200 for a Fatboy is unnecessary for a user grade piece.  You may be looking at rhodium replates or very nice original gold plated Executives.  If you want to try one, patience and $40 will get you a user grade piece.  Then, stop there.  There is no need to go down the rabbit hole of the different versions like Toggles.  They shave basically the same, very little difference.  Now, if you dig the one you get and set out to collect them all, by all means have fun but don't think a $250 Toggle is going to be a substantial improvement in the shave itself.  I own danged near all of the different heads and likely could not tell the difference in shave output.  They feel relatively the same in the hand.  The big difference is only in how they look in the mirror while they perform the same task.  Don't get me wrong....I love all of mine and will never sell them...but this is the truth in my den.  The Fatboy shaves better than any of the other adjustable TTO's, but I like weight.  Others like the Slim better for various reasons, they are certainly worth a try too....another $30 investment.

But....thats only 5 adjustable TTOs in 3 different varieties! You have lots of work to do and a couple $1000s to spend....and that's if you stay away from serial toggles and bottom dials. Shall I start a list for you?
