Gem MMCC aka MicroMatic Cosed Comb (Clogproof)

As some of you know, I am a vintage only type of shaver. I had a couple of these for sale at the shop. I've always liked them because they were built like a truck. But I never used them because I got tore up once by a MMOC. I made the mistake of using a Blue Star blade.
So I saw someone that went with one as a noob and liked it. Not to be outdone, I grabbed one of the MMCC razors, took it home and spun up some of my Sheep Fat Shave Soap, dropped in a Gem from Connaught and I am pleasantly surprised. I'd put it on par with the Gem G-bar. I can't believe I've had one of these in my collection for years and never used it. I had one for sale a while back and got a question from a potential buyer who asked if it had 2 bumps on the inside. Mine does. I don't know if thats good or desirable or gee wizz. (like a triangle slot Gillette base plate?)
I am really liking this MMCC now. I might use it in the place of the G-bar this winter. I guess the crappy blade and sub-par soap left me thinking they were bad. I still need to try a MMOC if it's as scary as I remember, or it might be another good one I am overlooking.

The one without the Bumps (Bumpless) is thought to be more aggressive. I wouldn't compare it to the G-Bar at all and I shave with all of my vintage if they are kept in my collection. Glad you went with a coated SS Blade finally

OK. I was wondering why I got that random question. Makes sense now. I can see how it could change the angle of the blade ever so slightly. When I used the Blue Star, that must have been about 2012. I always got crappy shaves and rusted blades. When I bought from Connaught, never had that problem again. I should have retired these sooner.

Even though I never used them till now, there is no arguing that the MMOC and MMCC are the toughest built razors made. They could double as a boat anchor or aircraft wheel chock. They are just indestructible. I always thought, "why did they build a razor that never breaks and lasts forever if they were so crappy". Well, it was just the blade I used. These are really great razors. Built like a tank and very effective.

I thought only the early MMOC razors came bumpless. There is a Clog Pruf Peerless with 17 teeth and the older verion with fewer. I think the Peerless is a shade more efficient.

In regards to the OCMM, no bumps in the blade tray = Gen 1, two bumps = Gen 2. I've read people say that the first gen razors are more aggressive, but I have one of each and they feel the same to me. Like you I used one a few years ago and it was so harsh and unforgiving I hated it. Fast forward to this year I decided to do the "Austere August" challenge on r/Wetshaving where you use the same setup (including the blade) for the entire month. Yes I used the OCMM and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't peel my skin off on the first stroke. By the end of the month it honestly felt like shaving with a tech. I think I just got a lot better at shaving since I tried it years ago and that was the biggest factor.

I have found that it is possible to seat the blade in a MMOC such that it looks good on cursory inspection, but shaves harshly.  Carefully reseating the blade properly brings it back to wonderfulness.  Some advocate thickening the spine with an old blade back to correct the angle of the modern blades.  I haven't tried this yet, but will when my MMOC next comes up in rotation.

Maybe the MMOC I had was bumpless with the crappy blade. I swear this clogproof with 2 bumps is a sweatheart. I love it. Still haven't re-tried the MMOC yet. Still enjoying my new love affair with this clogproof.
