I know in this wonderful world of Wolfmans that many a perfect razor already exists to prevent you from experimenting.

But there is another deeper, darker, subset of scoundrels from the fuzzy underbelly of the shaving world that actually mix and match parts to make a razor, then use it to determine it's effectiveness.

I am one of those.

I was out on the prowl recently and found a Gillette New. I really dislike them. They never give me the results that others claim to get. But it was entirely intact with its case. I find it hard to pass up any vintage razor that includes its case, so I picked it up intending it to go on display only. After giving it the required initial clean and sterilization and looking over the case, I realized there was something under the cardboard sliding around. The cardboard has been glued so I couldn't just pull it out, but I could see through the bladebank slot that it was an Old Type base plate. Curiosity spiked, I spent the next 20 minutes with toothpicks coaxing the curved baseplate out of the blade bank slot. After cleaning it up I was rewarded with a near pristine early 1918 baseplate # E557897 non-military OT.
So what am I to do 98 year old razor base plate that hasn't been used to shave with since before the 30s? Use it as intended of course! I went to my defunct pile Old Types and found a clean cap. I like it because the 2 posts and thread post are different color brass from that of the cap. It found its home on the base plate. Then, using the heavy bar handle that came with the New, I had a freshly minted Frankenrazor made from 3 differing razor sets.
How does it shave? Glad you asked! I would compare it to the 37C, or a SS with a Feather. I brought it to life with a Personna Blue. I didn't even have to shim it as I was expecting to do as with some of my OTs. A VERY effective yet mild and irritation free shave. 4 shaves later and nary a single blemish or hint of facial displeasure.
