It’s hard to keep track of all the different names...I stick to calling everything 2 band and 3 band ( in my mind at least). I started 8 years ago with 3 band silvertip for it’s touted luxury and softness... but slowly moved to 2 band as I developed my face lathering technique and found my preferred level of tip softness and backbone that I prefer. Since moving to 2 band knots I’ve yet to return to 3 band although I should at some point. It seems my current preference is moderate to high density 2 band knots in the neighborhood of 26-28mm with really soft face feel and zero scrub or scritch. My favorite knots seem to be 50mm or less in loft. Real gel tips are a bonus and preferred whenever possible.

3-band is my preferred hair. Best can be just as good or better than silvertip. I dabble in it all though.

Living on the edge
Recently acquired a Muhle STF XL25mm knot custom lofted at 54mm and it has made me question
all my previous choices.

This muhle knot is excellent....it's a lather monster with any soap I try, even the stubborn B&M cool reserve.
Plus I don't have to baby it.

Makes me question the need to shell out big bucks on badger from this point on.

thanks for the replies thus far. we're going to do a small run of shaving brushes for the DFS Movember fundraiser and since I haven't used a badger brush in so long, I wasn't sure what was popular these days.

we'll likely use a knot similar to maggard's SHD badger in a fan style, I think..

Oumo makes great knots.  This is a 24mm SHD HMW Silvertip knot in a vintage Rooney handle that I just restored.

Sounds fun!

Though it seems I have become a bulb fan lately.

Recently I have used one of Milton's 26mm tip knots and enjoyed it quite a bit. I prefer the fan.  Also a Maggard's SHD 28mm fan that has been quite nice and bloomed into a monster of a knot. Very soft. I enjoy the softest tips I can find and I am not a big fan of a whole lot of backbone but that is changing slightly as time goes on.

You have to try it Marcos! I have one even broke my rule about only having white and black handle to try one. It is definitely my best face feeling brush. Only issue is that it is a pain in the tuckus to load.

Highly agree!! Milton’s v3 Tip knots are out of this world. Also very fond of DG’s b5 & b6
