Ok so a couple of questions for any members reading this post.

So in my soap formulas I use more Grass Fed Beef Tallow than other fats I use such as Duck Fat which is 2nd percentage wise and is always in my formulas. Now and then I’ll use Camel hump fat or just Camel fat I call them secondary fats as they are at a lower level than the Beef or Duck fats. 
Lately I have been trying out my formulas using both Grass fed Bison Tallow and Pig Fat, aka Lard, aka Manteca. I have to say I like both fats and I’ve tested them in a few formulas. 

So I have a question as I had one customer/friend say that if I used Pig fat in one of my shave formulas he wouldn’t use it as he would never put pig fat on his face.

I may be living under a rock but to me animal fat is animal fat other than some having different enzymes etc. would it be a religious thing that would make a person not use a shave soap with Lard in it ?

So my question is if you saw the name Lard, Pig Fat or Manteca on a ingredient list would you not purchase the soap?

I’ve read numerous articles about old soap makers using primarily lard in their bath soaps and shave soap recipes. 

FYI I do see a slight difference between the Bison and the Pig fat in my formula as the Lard does seem to be a little more oily feeling but I’m splitting hairs here.

I totality get the vegan thing and the fact that it’s become fashionable these days or if it’s a religious thing or if your a strict vegan. Also there are folks that have allergies to animal fats and that’s my main reason for coming out with a vegan cream in the very near future. That set aside in this post I’m asking about Pig fat and would it be a turn off and for what reasons?

Having been a Shabbos Goy in the past…
Simply put…both the Muslim and Jewish religions (and maybe others, that I’m not aware of) believe that pigs are prohibited.
Jews believe that only animals that chew their cud and have cloven hooves can be kosher.

(Not being judgmental, anti-Semitic or whatever moniker…just answering the question.)

Probably the only way to know what put that particular individual off would be asking him Frank. Good question to ask everyone to get others views but only he knows why it was prohibitive for him.

Actually I did and he said not for religious reasons or any of that he just thinks lard or pig fat is a cheap ingredient and he doesn’t want it on his face. I do have to think forward as Dan said as I do have a lot of customers overseas so it’s a strong consideration and I’m strongly leaning towards just going with Bison Tallow to avoid the situation altogether. In fact just this second while writing this I made my decision to use the Bison Tallow. 

That’s it!  

Let’s move on to Greenfresh Bath Soap!

I have zero filter, so I’ll attempt to answer the age old PIG question intelligently and unbiased

Honestly, if I saw those ingredients on an Ethos label I’d say “Frank is officially old and has lost his mind.  Why would he put inferior material in an ultra-premium boutique product?” Ethos is DIFFERENT from ALL the others because of your level of experience/education in cosmetics AND the materials you select for the products.  Products (like Dragonsbeard 1&2) that are synonymous with YOUR name and stature in this community

Bison is an excellent choice for Ethos Products and they have split hooves! 

Would you sear fresh scallops in Kerrygold Grass Fed Pure Irish Salted Butter or sear them in Lard? 

I’m NOT a religious man but I have a very deep belief in Karma.  What goes around comes back around 10 fold.  Having said that, from a Religious standpoint many people wouldn’t use products on THEIR body because they know pigs bathe in and eat their own feces.  Can we apply the “you are what you eat rules” here? Maybe 

One would really have to dissect the Torah and Quran to understand why these 2 ancient religions follow rules and regulation set forth from those books.  Again I’m NOT a religious man (maybe when convenient) but the simple answer is: The Torah came from G-d and the Quran from Muhammad.  The rules/guidelines are in there, follow them for an amazingly brilliant life. No one in their right mind will question G-d. The End.

Religion is like money, it’s impolite to talk about amongst polite company, but it’s a fascinating subject for intelligent conversation. Why do I leave out the vowel O in the Supreme Beings name? Well, his real name is YHWH.  Yes, I left the vowels out of his name there too for a couple reasons, but mostly because I don’t need the bad karma of using his name in vain

Thank you my friend for the encouraging words and you also make some very good points. It’s funny I’ve gotten 3 calls and a couple of emails from customers that read this post and they all pretty much are on the same page as you are. So it’s now a bus stop I passed by and it’s in my rear view mirror! Lol 

I will say I’m always looking for ways to improve the products. The lard thing was just something I read about on a soap making forum and it caught my attention.

Ok we now have what I believe to be the first authentic Cannabis based CBD Shave soap. This first batch has its own natural aroma as there’s nothing added. I plan on making 3 to 4 batches a  year and I’ll rotate them. One natural scented like this first batch and then the next couple using different essential oil blends added and then I’ll circle back around again to the natural scent and so on. This way customers can have a choice. I just finished and now they have to cure and we just ordered the side labels so I’ll post an update when it goes live on the website. 


It smells like Woodstock in here!
