End of an Era

I guess the era of the gas-powered muscle car is finally coming to an end (although some have claimed that it actually ended in the mid-1970s).

I understand that everything always changes, and it makes a lot of sense environmentally to phase out the internal combustion engine, but I still feel a bit sad about it. Fast cars of the past played major roles in some of my happiest and saddest times. I had a 1961 Porsche Super-90 from 1968 to 1970, a 1969 Camaro Z/28 from 1971 to 1976, and a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger (Ford 289) from 1979 to 1982, all classics for their times and all capable of transporting me to another world. Each was associated with some of my greatest memories. But it appears that those days are nearly gone.

Truly a sad time in the automotive world.

I would argue that there was a muscle car resurgence for a few years in the mid-90s. At the time, it was still possible to order incredible performance in a somewhat bare-bones package. It wasn’t as a la carte as the 60’s, but there were still great bang-for-the buck options if you knew what to get.

Since then, the highest performing options have been pushed into the halo model stratosphere.

Granted, some e-cars are capable of astounding performance, but something has been lost too.
