OK, gents, the soap and the aftershave arrived at my place yesterday afternoon, and I had my inaugural shave with the soap this morning.

Packaging is nice, and the scent of the soap off the puck is pleasant. To my nose, the scent in the aftershave is slightly different, likely because in the soap the scent notes have to compete with natural scents from the other ingredients of the soap. Straight off the puck, those "other" scents seem to make up about 15-20% of what I smell (not unpleasant, just changes the scent a little bit from what is in the aftershave). I can't really describe the scent, except to say that it's a woody, maybe earthy, complex cologne scent. There is a faint resemblance of the scent to chocolate or cocoa, which I consider a plus.

So, this morning I scraped a bit of soap off the top of the puck, placed it into my lather bowl, and went to work. I always bowl lather, but I load the soap directly onto my brush, so I wasn't sure how much soap to put into the bowl; I just used about the same amount as I used to use when I used creams, maybe a tiny bit more.

Well, it was plenty. The soap lathered up very quickly. I added water about 3 or 4 times, a little bit at a time, until I had a lather that looked like it would be perfect for my needs. I am an open blade shaver, and today's shave was with a folding Feather SS shavette loaded with a Schick Proline blade.

The soap in the container is a dark brown, and the lather never really turns white, but has a tan-white color to it, sort of like B&M Lavanille, although not quite as dark. The lather coated my face nicely and I was ready for the first pass.

Glide was good, and cushion seemed to be really good, too. It was almost like I couldn't feel the blade on my face, even though I was using an open blade razor. I got a nice smooth first pass. Rinsing showed good reduction and a nice face feel. It felt very slick; I don't do passes without relathering, but if you are the kind of person who likes to touch-up without relathering, it feels like it would work well.

Second pass lather was not as dense as the first pass lather, but it was plenty slick and provided for an easy, smooth second pass. There were maybe two places on the neck/jawline that needed a quick touch-up, and I was done.

The aftershave splash did reveal a couple of small areas of sting, which I don't normally have. This might be a bit counterintuitive, but I think I got those small areas because the cushion was really good. Let me explain. My suspicion is that I pushed too hard on these small areas (dense growth around the chin) because blade feel was muted by the cushion. Let me be clear, though; these tiny areas of sting were not something that anybody could see, and there was certainly no weeping or cuts. Just what I would refer to as a mild razor burn. On the right side of the chin, the area was maybe 3 mm in diameter and on the left side, even smaller, so we are certainly not talking about any major damage here, lol.

The aftershave smells amazing. It dries down really fast on the face. On first application I feel like I didn't use enough, and it dried down before I could spread it all over the face and neck. So I added a bit more. After dry down my face was soft and smooth.

About 25 minutes after the shave, to me the scent was still quite powerful, so I asked my wife whether it smelled like "too much." She said not at all. I then put my face close to hers and asked, "Can you smell it?" Her answer to that was, "It smells really good."

So, all in all, a real winner here, both the soap and the aftershave. My only concern is that for about 30 minutes after I applied the aftershave my nose was acting up a bit. I have a lot of scent allergies. I am most allergic to cedar and juniper, but I'm also allergic to sandalwood. I know this scent has Oud in it, and I wonder if there's a bit of crossover. I'll see, after the next shave, whether this scent may turn out to be a "no-go" for me because of my stupid allergies. But make no mistake, it smells really nice.

Sorry you have what may turn out to be allergies kingfisher, and I hope that proves not to be the case.  It has been a while since I weighed in here but FWIW, I still can't find enough kind words to do justice to the skin food splash.   It smells great and restores the skin almost magically.

Good luck on your next go.

Excellent very detailed review my friend. I’d like to address two things that may help you with both the scent and the little sting you felt. On the scent. It is mostly Argarwood oil with Oud Resin. There is also some Rose Absolute, Tonka bean, Amber, Madagascar Vanilla Bean and a very small amount of Australian Sandalwood that makes up the scent. No Cederwood or Juniper oil. Also the scent would certainly not smell exactly the same in a soap base as it would in a liquid solution. Especially with the soap containing many different ingredients like the Camel and Sheep’s milk and all the other ingredients that make up the soap. This happens when I make a Shampoo & Conditioner. Ones a soap base and ones a cream base so even though the scent is the exact same in both the aroma comes out much cleaner in the shampoo than the conditioner so sometimes depending on the scent I have to add a bit more to the conditioner to get a closer match to the shampoo.

Also on the slight sting.. I’m very curious to see if that happens more than once or twice. Reason there are ingredients in both the Shave soap and Skin Food splash that are exfoliating and also skin balancing and a couple of others that remove any toxins. So let’s say your skin needed all these issues I mentioned then you would feel them working in the form of a little stinging which would tell you they are doing their job. With that if the stinging were to continue beyond let’s say the 3 rd shave then I’d say it’s either you may have a slight allergy to one of the many ingredients or like you mentioned going over a spot one to many times while also applying to much pressure. The soap and skin food splash contains many ingredients that I’m pretty sure have never been used in a shave soap or an aftershave before that are very active and meant to improve the condition of the skin without using oils which depending on the oils used can clog pores or may leave the skin feeling oily especially after being on a few hrs. The DB Shave soap and Skin Food splash should feel very light on the skin.
So my suggestion is give them 3 shaves and if your still feeling sensitivities then stop using them and pass them on to the next person on the list and when I release my next 4 to 5 Shave Soaps and new Skin Food formula as they will be my own formula then I’ll send you a sample of whichever one you’d like to try and see how they work for you.

Hope the explanation helps a bit.

Thanks again my friend and keep us posted On the next few shaves.

Frank, yeah, I figured that's why the soap scent and the aftershave scent weren't an exact match. I'm totally ok with the scent of both products. They both smell really good, and they are ALMOST exactly the same.

As far the stinging is concerned, I'm 95% sure it had nothing to do with the formulation and had everything to do with me making shaving errors at those spots. Those shaving errors made it so that the alcohol in the aftershave provided a sting. I'm pretty sure I'm not sensitive to anything in the aftershave, except for the nasal allergy issue; I've been plagued by nasal allergies all my life. The number of colognes that I can actually use is really, really small, unfortunately. I really love a lot of scents that I just can't use.

I'll be posting more after I've had a chance to try it a couple more times. Thanks, again, for the opportunity.

Thanks my friend for the info and just so you know the next generation of Skin Food Splashes will have less alcohol in it and more Witch Hazel and Aloe. Basically what the version you have now is Oleo’s formula with just my EOS Complex in it so any new post shave product will be my own formulas.

Sorry to hear about your nasal allergies. That is why I’ve got little glass vials with a sample of the matching Aftershave that I’ll be including in the box whenever someone buys just the shaving soap this way they can sample it to see if they not only like the scent but also if it works for the person.

Looking forward to the next review!

Hi Frank!

Outstanding to hear of the NEW releases right around the Holidays! I’m looking forward to the new scents and formulations by “your (ETHOS) hands only.”

Cheers!

I can’t wait for the new releases. I loved the performance and overall skin feel from using the Dragonsbeard but unfortunately with having Asthma the scent did not work for me. Hopefully you have some simpler scents or Unscented in the future.

Hey KFish!

I had a shave with my beast (R41 V2011) the other day and as much as I like to think my technique is brilliant coupled with my OCD tendencies, lol, I did get a couple hot spots, same as you described above, same outcome (even with a different; Declaration Soap).  Finished with Frank’s DB splash and 100% as you described, however, I LOVE the sting! I don’t feel splash is working unless I get a warm sting, lol.

Before I had the DB splash, I was using Chatillon Lux Admiral which I felt paired well with DB soap and same outcome; warm sting.  Obviously everyone’s experience and skin/allergies are different, but I thought I would offer that to you as DB has been used in my rotation minimally 1x per week and I feel is one of the most moisturising soaps I’ve used.  I’m very fair too, I don’t have the facial hair you describe and I shave 2-3x per week.

Cheers!

I know you have issues with certain scents with your Asthma it’s a hit or miss with you so as soon as I have all the products ready for release I’ll send samples of the scents to you to see which ones work well for you. Also I’lm going to make at least 8 to 10 unscented Skin Food Splashes for sure and if I have time maybe an unscented soap as well but I don't want to rush the shave soap as I have some ideas on an unscented soap that I’d like to incorporate into the formula, but the skin food splash for sure.
