Don't quit on your lather too soon...

I am new to wet shaving and I have scoured this site and others for information and help.  I have to say that this is the best advice I have received.

I’ve been following this thread from the beginning, and all along I’ve been wondering what PannaCrema (Marco) would have to say about it all, since he is a proponent of a much different lathering technique, detailed in the second half of the post in this link:

Now, I’m writing this comment smilingly, just because what Marco explains seems to be so drastically different than the advice in this thread. In the end, I think the best anyone can do is just try things for themselves and see what ends up working best. There are definitely some good tips on some approaches to lathering in this thread.

I agree. I have been face lathering for some time now and the only reason I can come up with is to save time and nothing else. I have always used a bowl for creams like Tabula Rasa and St. James of London as an example. So I started bowl lathering again after I read your take on your thread. I have done so with my last 5 soaps and wondered why I started face lathering because of the amount of lather I produced in the bowl by listening to you and not stoping too soon. Yesterday I used Queen Charlotte Soaps, Fougere and I got half of a bowl of lather it was incredible. So, I think I will be bowl lathering from now on.

I have face lathered 99.99% of the time for years but not for any reason other than I don't want to treat a bowl to the experience of a great brush!

Kidding aside, I like the sensation of building a lather on my face and feel it does a better job of pre-conditioning what is a thick and somewhat unruly beard.

I agree that face lathering may feel better on you face and prepare you beard before shave. However, I can bowl lather now and continue the process on my face to prep my beard. Again, most every topic of wet shaving is subjective.

I get a different lather when I bowl lather. Air is much more easily incorporated when bowl lathering, producing more volume and a lighter, whipped cream texture. Whereas face lathering, conversely, limits how much air you can whip in, so it is a denser, sour-creamish texture.

I don't like the yogurt consistency lather. I like mine just under it. I admit I probably don't add enough water to Mine face lathering. I bet a spray bottle with water would work good to spray it on your face if you already had lather built but it would be somewhat of a hassle im sure.
