This is what I use. It is not that hard to remove a knot set with this. I removed one this morning by putting it in very hot water heated up in microwave. It was a 27mm hole that I opened up more to put a 30mm cashmere. I love it now[Image: IZ2rCUE.jpg]
To the OP you did a great job on your re-knot.

When using the RTV silicone, does anyone use anything other than cork slices or plastic washers? I used nickels first with it and it severely discolored the coins which seeped into the base of the knot a little bit.

Hey Joe, what loft did you end up with on the SynBad knot?
I just received a brush fron APShave with a 2BED knot set at 53mm. Just wondered how they compared loft wise.

I am going to be removing a 30mm knot in another brush wondered if you would replace with the SynBad knot again?

I was going to attach a photo, but I fail at photography and just can't get a decent perspective to give even a semblance of accuracy.  I also lack calipers, but using a metric tape measure, I have loft at ~55mm.  Truth be told, I'd like a bit more backbone, so I think I would prefer 50mm loft, but I'm just guessing here.

What I do like about the 30mm SynBad is ZERO prickliness.  Apparently, based on discussion I have seen before, there is variability in the non-30mm SynBads.  I don't know why, but there are stories out there.

I like the SynBad, but I'd want a handle that can accommodate a really deep bore so I could play around with loft.  If this knot had anymore loft, I think I would lean towards despising it, and I'm someone who has always preferred soft tips & moderate backbone.  The 30mm SynBad delivers on the former in spades, but if you want even moderate backbone, this needs to be set deeeep, IMO.

All that said, I like having this around for a change of pace.

Anyone else try gorilla glue to set a knot? I’ve been using it and it sets nicely. I glued a knot yesterday with gorilla glue and test lathered it in 2 hours. That bad boy isn’t coming loose.

Why wouldn't you use a marine epoxy cement?

Nothing wrong with Marine epoxy but I don't like that it's a longer set time (at least the ones I've seen). If I'm using epoxy, I prefer one that sets quickly.

I suppose you could get some shifting of the knot with a longer set time.  A few years back I had an accident and dropped the aluminum handle DFS Le Envyshave brush on the tile floor resulting in a tiny ding on the handle and a broken knot - I reglued it with epoxy and its fine.  Probably not perfect given that the plastic base of the knot was broken but so far its held up.

I'm guessing that if you ever plan to reknot the brush then the silicone would be the better option. The epoxy would likely be a chore to deal with.

I know very little about adhesives, but I can only say I have had zero issues with the Loctite silicone that I used on this brush. Recall I even mused that I might have used too little, but again, zero issues.

Yes, I think folks (myself included at one time) get nervous that silicone won't have a strong enough hold, but it works great.
