I'm interested in brewing a batch for myself and have been watching some videos and reading some articles recently.

I'm curious for those that have already done this, what approach and recipe worked best for you.

should bay leaves be used or the EO?

rum on its own or rum & vodka?

etc...

Well dang here’s a thread to warm my heart. I’ve been planning to make some bay rum for a while now and have been slowly accumulating ingredients. I should probably get moving on the project because the rum supply seems to be dropping  Big Grin 

Making your own post shave product will definitely allow you to customize to your own preferences like whether or not you like clove or what kind of rum. Most recipes call for Jamaican rum but I’m leaning towards Cruzon Blackstrap rum. It’s so tasty which is why it keeps disappearing. 

Thanks for posting this thread andrewjs18 i think this is an excellent project. Who knows? Maybe we can do a pass around of members’ bay rum and provide feedback to each other. Is it possible to create one bay rum to rule them all?

I'm not going to give away all our secrets with Island Estate, but we do use REAL rum.

Cruzan Black Strap Reserve is a favourite along with Cruzan Single Barrel if looking for good inexpensive drinkers (stipulated that rarely imbibe alcohol)

I've got some captain morgan spiced rum in my basement...but I think it might have some hints of vanilla in it that I'm not super crazy about so I'll probably just pick up a non-spiced bottle of rum soon.

It might be interesting to do the same recipe with different rums to see if there is a discernible difference.  Confused2  I think an advantage that us DIYers might have over the artisans in the biz is that even if they are using real rum, given the quantities involved the artisans likely aren't using as good a rum as the DIYers are able to do.  Maybe they are

Probably not. The bay is going to overshadow the rum.

I just bought my bay leaf EO (Pimenta Racemosa), neem oil and glycerin. I have cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, cloves an orange and a lemon coming sometime on Friday from whole foods.

I already have vodka and witch hazel....I'll run to the liquor store this weekend to grab a different bottle of rum..

Isn’t neem oil the same as tea tree oil?  I’d go easy with that note. I don’t mind it but it can be over powering. I have a half bottle left of Chatillon Lux Tea Tree Roberant and Shawn has mixed in some citrus, lemon I think snd it’s great but that tea tree scent would clash with bay rum I think.
