Dr. Jon's is a very soft soap, so I usually scoop a small bit out and bowl lather. Makes it much easier to load the brush and make sure you don't overload. Very good performance from Dr. Jon's soaps, favorite scent is the new Bandit.

I had lathering problems several years ago. I started using distilled water and have never had another problem. Distilled water costs any where from $.88 to $1.00 a gallon. Problem solved.

I've tried a couple more times, adding the water gradually, and there is a very narrow sweet spot between paste and soup in which I get a rather thin lather. Takes a lot of work, though.

I'd thought of trying distilled water, but frankly, I'm not sure I like this stuff well enough to put in any more effort. There are other soaps that lather much more easily for me (Sapone di Paolo, Wet Shaving Products, Italian Barber, to name a few).
