Yesterday, I received an Old Type that I won on the Bay.  I soaked it overnight in a bath of water and dish soap. This is what it looked like last night:

This morning, after 14 hours, I rinsed them and then sprayed with Kaboom, let stand about 45 minutes and came back to rinse them. This is what they looked like:

Scrubbing with a soft tooth brush got rid of most of the remaining black crud (old soap?).  But the pink hue is staying.  My best guess is some sort of reaction of the Kaboom bath/tile cleaner with something in or on the razor. I have used kaboom on many of my razors for cleaning off soap build up.

Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this?  Any comments will be greatly appreciated!

The pink looks like you have removed the plating and exposed the brass underneath. My guess is that the coloration of the brass has been effected by the cleansers used, giving it the pink-ish hue.

Just a guess...

I polished with some Flitz, and this is the result:

Looking much better now!

I do think something (bleach?) in Kaboom reacted with the brass.

I can see the first picture that most of the pink spots were already there. They're a different color and not as large.

The soak and cleaning removed the grime, discolored the brass, and flaked off the loose edges around the spots where the plating was already compromised. Which made the spots appear more dramatic I think.

Whatever Kaboom or Scrubbing Bubbles is going to do it usually does within 5 to 10 minutes. Anything more is risky.

I don't think that it caused the loss of plating here though. Just made it a little discolored or "clean" possibly.

Polish will improve the appearance but it will be an endless battle to keep the look fresh.
