all, I spoke to CarbonShavingCo. earlier today and he suggested the following, which I agreed with, once the pass around razors reach the last person on the list:

As a small token of our appreciation and with Andrew’s/DFS permission we would like to have the pass-around units returned to us. Instead of DFS raffling off the units that were in the pass around, we would like offer up serial number #1 and #2 for the raffle(funds to support DFS), these would be new units. We thought this would be the best home for them.

Thank you to all who have tried and commented on the Cx-316L, we can’t thank the community enough...your input has helped us refine our road map, provided valuable product feedback and helped create awareness for our company. As a small, boot-strapped business starting off, that means a lot….

A couple of updates:

1) We plan to announce some additional handle options “shortly,” if the first production handles are ready, we can send them directly to the final folks on the pass around. We will post pictures and specs as soon as we can….

2) These additional handle options are a direct result of your feedback and we wanted to recognize that.

We plan to have 2 new handle design options to offer our customers so they have a choice based on what works for them. We will have a new 316L Stainless and a Titanium design. We will offer all 3 options for new customers to choose from.

Preliminary details of both designs are as follows:

We plan to sell these handles to past and future Cx customers only i.e. we are not planning to sell these handles on their own. There are a number of reasons for this including fit, balance, weight, etc...we designed these handles for the Cx-316L head.

Current Cx customers will receive a discount if they choose to purchase an additional handle (Details TBD)

Availability: 2 weeks (We expect to be able to ship preliminary pre-production units next earlier to the last folks on the pass around. They won’t be production units, but will be a good representation of the final units based on the pre-production units we picked up yesterday).

On another note, we continue explore other feedback including micro-fiber bags to replace our burlap. The challenge is finding a non-plastic, sustainable solution, this is important to us. We found, what we believe to be, cotton based micro-fiber however they are off-shore made. The direction we think we should go is towards a vintage case be it wood, metal and/or other sustainable material….certainly for select products.

It turned out that both the Carbon Razor and a Karve Razor I had ordered arrived together in the mail on Thursday.  So I used them both on Friday, and again this morning. Friday I used the C plate on the Karve, and the stock handles on both razors.  I used Feather blades, Cremo, and Alt Innsbruck. The shaves were both good, but both razors were poorly balanced and handle heavy.  Both handles weighed around 60 grams. 



For this mornings shave I used different handles.  With the Karve Razor I used an iKon Tuckaway Handle, which at 67 mm weighs 50 grams.  With the Carbon Cx I used a handle made by PAA and sold with some of their razors.  It's 70 mm long, made of hollow brass, and weighs only 35 grams.  With those smaller handles both razors were made lighter and more agile, especially the Cx. That having been said, I could find very little difference between the results with both razors, and the results were all good.  Next shave I'm going to use the PAA handle on the Karve, and the (45 gram) Durham-Duplex handle on the Cx.  I'll probably use it 2 more times, before sending it on to the Peoples Republic of California.



As you can see I prefer short handles.  But long or short, balance is really all about weight.  For me that means the handle should weigh about 1.5 times the weight of the head.  The Cx316 head weighs 26 grams, so the handle should weigh + or - 39 grams.  The PAA, iKon, & Durham-Duplex handles all fit that protocol, which is why I chose them.  More later.

As a side note we do not intend to provide all handles we offer as stand alone products in the future, we intend to continue to offer some products as limited editions complete razors.

The new handles are much nicer!

First shave for me was great, very impressed. Smooth, very close. Angle and pressure easy to optimize.

Not impressed at all with the handle, and if the new handles have a similar balance point, far south of where I want, I wouldn't want them either. The Carbon head weighs 27g, about the same as my New Long Comb or Flat Bottom Tech head - 2g less than my R41 or R41. It doesn't need it benefit from a heavy handle as provided . I'll note that the Timeless Bronze and Blackland Dart similarly adopt a balance point south of traditional which I don't care for either, though the Carbon is worse. Stop it.

Carbon Shaving CX316L vs. Seygus Zepprlin .7/.9.

I scrapped stock Carbon handle for my tungsten weighted Tech handle which balances perfectly and is my preferred length. Fair fight against the Seygus. Both are pretty sweet, I prefer the handling and feel of the Carbon, which has a lighter and thinner profile head. It also has particularly large cap span which I think accounts for its greater audible feedback. The Seygus provides much less feedback but is smooth and ultimately more efficient. No knockout but decision Seygus. BIC blades.

Vs Gamechanger 84 . I enjoyed the Carbon more today, managing based on audible feedback makes for a fun shave. The Gamechanger has no great flaws but not much character either. On this day anyway the Carbon seemed a bit more efficient (meaning I made better use of it probably) despite some obvious ATG chatter (only noticeable when you really slow down).

Karve D/Carbon CX316L, Treet Platinum

The very heavy rigid head of the Karve gives the razor so different a feel from the Carbon it's hard to make comparisons. I think the Karve had a little easier going ATG but overall efficiency seems quite comparable. Again handling and enjoyment factor the Carbon excels. The Karve has a real premium feel at a third of the price though which is hard to put out of the equation.
