I might get a momentary sting from the alum if I'm overly aggressive with shaving, but it goes away after rinsing it off. It's a good indicator if you're doing something wrong.
I use a "crystal deodorant" stick instead of a block or stick intended for post-shave use. They are twice as big for about the same price, and always have a handle. You have to do research to find the potassium alum type, and not ammonium alum. They rarely say on the packaging which type it is. They only say that it has no aluminum [which is not exactly true, since the formula is KAl(SO4)2]. What they really mean is that it does not contain aluminum chlorohydrate, commonly found in antiperspirants. The sticks from DSA (Deodorant Stones of America) all use potassium alum.

These two are both about the same price, but are 120 vs 60 grams. (The Omega stick might be about 1/5 used.)
