Calling all Gillette Hounds

I picked this up today at an antiques fair. I think it's a Gillette New Improved Standard model. It looks as if it was once fully finished in gold but most is gone apart from at the central handle barrel part. Everything points to it being the New Standard even the case but I have bought vintage Gillette with unmatching cases before. The only thing that doesn't match up to the examples on the Mr Razor website is the pattern on the tightening knob. It doesn't have the straight lined border pattern between the full and half diamond pattern on it.
Any info would be appreciated.

Looks to me to be a very early 1921 model according to the serial #. I would even say that it is plated in nickel or rhodium (whichever was used in that period) and what you mistake for gold is actually the brass starting to show through. What we normally call "brassing". I cant explain the matching knurling on the handle tip. Yours is different than every picture on Mr. Razor site. I think yours is a standard production run razor albeit with a very early production date. One to hold on to for sure.

One thing I keep in mind when using Mr Razor site is he is based in Europe. All (most) of the razors he presents were probably sourced in his homeland for the pictures and documentation. I dont think the American made razors are as fully represented on his site as they should be. Plus he doesnt document every make and model produced because finding them in such pristine condition is near impossible. But his site is still the best for finding museum perfect picture representations of the various models produced.

Thanks, I've since realised that it's definitely brassing coming through the finish rather than the other way around. Interesting point regarding the pattern on the tightening knob. Thanks for the info.
