Boar brushes popularity

I have a semogue boar brush and a pair of synthetics. I use the boar when I want to exfoliate and it works well, but for me synthetics build a better lather cushion.

For me, synthetics build a quality lather just quicker, not that the lather itself is any better. Boars usually take a bit longer to build that lather you like. I have, however, the feeling that if they are used very regularly, they are as quick as a badger brush, although I'd agree that nothing beats a good synthetic in terms of quickness. It's just that artificial feel to them that they have, that makes me prefer natural bristles, unless I'm on travel or running short of time, in which case I'd reach for the synthetics.

I agree with this. Perhaps "better" was a poor choice of words, i should have said that for me, synthetics generally create a thicker cushion when face lathering - Both boar and synthetics are more than adequate to get the job done and each have their pros and cons. Synthetics definitely whip it up quickly.

Recently, I placed an order for a synthetic Omega brush. The store accidentally sent me a boar brush (and later refunded my purchase).

It’s been a while since I had a boar brush. I’m still in the process of breaking this one in (that’s a break-in lather in the picture), but it’s coming along nicely. I probably won’t use this brush as much as I do my synthetics, but it’s still kind of nice to have a boar brush again. Heck, I might even get another one at some point.

(I’ve read that boar brush sales have gone down a lot as synthetics have gotten better and gained popularity. I think the fact that Thäter is now producing boar brushes might give this brush type a little boost.)

The more they're used, the better they behave. That's the magic and charm of boars. Oh, well, and their price. Most honest brushes on Earth, if you ask me. Just use it, I doubt it'll disappoint you ?.

I can say that it seems to get a little better with every use. Since I don’t use it all the time, I know it’ll probably be a few weeks before it reaches its full potential, but I’m already quite happy with it.

I alternate between two Omega boars, 10049 and 10098. The '49 is 6 years old, the '98 is maybe 3. I'd say they're both nicely broken in now. And neither shows any signs of wear; these brushes may well outlast me.  

Hi all, I have three new omega 98 professional boar brushes and before first use I noticed red brittle hair. Sprayed some alcohol on it and oddly enough some red was left in the Kleenex.

Here is one strand of a few I pulled out. Have any of you seen some red on your new brushes?

I found that my boars broke in faster if I lathered with a scuttle. I used either a Dirty Bird scuttle or an Sarah Bonneyman scuttle and both have a fairly rough bottoms which I think accelerated the process. I have that brush with a red handle well broken in and its really nice as well as the Semogue brushes I have.

Whatever that is, it looks to me like the red stuff was somehow transferred to the bristles, so I'd be at ease. Just give it a few lathers with dish soap and see if it goes away by itself before using anything else.

That’s what I did. I did a few lathers with dish soap and then put it in the fridge in a glass of water for three days.

I only noticed after three days when I was drying it on the towel trying to break it in. All three of my new brushes contain more that one strand in each brush.

Sterile or not, I don’t want the red stuff from an animal to go on my face.
