I haven't used any canned shaving cream/foam/gels in probably 7+ years now. I should see if walmart or kmart sell a travel size of barbasol just to see how the shave is when I use better razors..

Please don't misinterpret my post. I'm not ashamed at all; I was just introducing what I thought was a bit of levity to my "blasphemous" use of "canned goo." I like the other soaps I mentioned quite a bit and probably have enough on hand to last awhile. I just grabbed my lonely can of Barbasol on a whim this morning and was pleasantly surprised. I tried a couple of the gels many years ago when they first came out but never cared for them. I'm also old enough to remember when I could pick up a can of Barbasol for 89 cents.

It’s good to revisit different options from time to time. One’s mindset can become a little narrow when everyone around (or on a forum like this) discusses only certain types of things. I’m always happy when someone gets a good shave using whatever equipment.

Granted, I’m more excited if someone used a razor or soap that I’m interested in. But I have used “canned goo” with safety razors, and on the other hand, I’ve used cartridge razors with an artisan soap, and the more I try different things, the more I feel my shaving technique keeps improving.

All I ever used was Barbasol Original and Mach 3s before I started traditional wet shaving. I've since tried the Barbasol with a DE a couple times and got good shaves with it. But since using a brush and good soap only adds a few minutes to the process and superior results (especially in post shave feel), I've found it well worth the time and will probably never use "canned goo" again. I would never deride others for doing so though. If it works for you and you like it, go for it.

It's your face if you want to slap butane or whatever propellant they use to get it out of the can that's your business.

Just giving you a bad time enjoy your shave however you want to.

I haven't used a canned gel or foam in a long time, but I certainly don't begrudge anyone the option to use whatever works for them.

I do try to avoid calling it "goo" just because it's rude to use insulting language. You never know who is going to read your words and find them acutely insulting, so I try to avoid it in general. Some call it being "PC" but I just call it polite...

I have a camping trip planned this July. A week in the woods. My first legitimate camping trip since I started shaving my head and using traditional gear. I'm kind of nervous and unsure how I'm going to handle it. I don't want to miss any shaves but I'm not at all sure that a primitive campground is conducive to a good straight razor shave. I may just pick up some Barbasol and a couple disposables just for convenience sake...

Good on you. Courtesy goes a long way.

Maybe a travel-sized Barbisol for your camping trip and one of your inexpensive DEs?

BadDad, why not get that canned foam or gel and a disposable to keep your comfort level high.  Then, when you take that camping trip, get the lay of the land.  You will be better able to determine if that straight razor shave can be done safely and in reasonable comfort without the convenience of a sink with hot and cold running water and, perhaps, a wall mirror in front of you.  That should let you test the waters and know if the next time you camp you want to go with your straight.  Let us know what you decide.  (By the way, my idea of camping is whether or not the Holiday Inn has an indoor pool. Tongue)

Chris and John Clayton, I try to show respect but must admit that I always found the term "canned goo" amusing and never showed disrespect.  To me, canned foam or gel (terms I also use) are inanimate objects and the idea of goo just means we've found something that we think is better.  Funnily enough, I was running late this morning so it was a Fusion/Aveno gel shave. Quick but not nearly as satisfying.  In a pinch, the goo came throo. Winking

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that in my case wet shaving has two main functional benefits:

1) It encouraged me to learn good technique, which is then also applicable to modern equipment;

2) It encouraged me to throw blades away after a reasonable number of shaves, instead of trying to squeeze as many uses out of them as I could. I used to strop cartridges on an old pair of jeans & use them for up to 6 weeks.

Everything else is primarily aesthetic (big-time aesthetic, to be sure).

It may also be easier on my rosacea. Not 100% sure on that one.

I have used enough goop in my life to satisfy and dislodge any desire for more.
Even whipping cream can no longer tempt me.

There is nothing better than a cloud light synthetic brush loaded with fragrant warm lather caressing my face, for starting each day with a big aaaahhh and a satisfied smile.
