So, what do you consider the best safety razor for a beginner? Why? Preferably $15 or under. No more than $20 or under.

I'll start. I'm going with the Weishi Long Handle. The price is right and its very mild. The long handle will feel more comfortable to hands used to the long handles on cartridge razors.

Maggard Razors always have some handle with V3 head for under $20. Right now, I see MR14. The head is a clone of Edwin Jagger DE89 head, which is a fantastic razor.

EDIT: Even better

Wolfman BBS-1!  Go big or go home!

Maggards has excellent razors for dirt cheap prices.  They have an excellent open comb produced by Parker I believe!?!?  Anywho..those heads with any stainless steel handle works well.

RR has the Tec II for I believe $7-$9 US.  A Knock off of the Gillette Tech ( Joe is pretty open about that).

Any lower than that you are moving into Yuma country...

Razorock Teck 2. Great shaver for anybody but additional advantage for beginners are the covered blade tabs. It's not a knock off, it's an improvement.

I would start with an Edwin Jagger DE89 or one of the German razor firms.

Start with some quaity to get a good shave and newbie is happy. Poor razor will kill any enthusiasm quickly.

FWiW my experience with Baili (ie Razorock Tek+ earlier three piece) and Merkur (several) leads me to to conclude that the former has superior quality control.

A stainless steel mamba or a aluminium baby smooth at Italian Barber would be great razors or the MJ90 .. all CNC machined which means tight tolerances

I'd just cut to the chase at get the Rockwell 6c. It might be a little more expensive but it's the last razor you'll ever need and has 6 plates to accommodate your preference.
