Below Freezing

Normaly I order software during the spring and the fall to avoid extreme heat and below freezing temperatures.  I broke that rule since the temps here in Iowa have just been fantastic. Just looking at some of my confirmations and it looks like some of my soaps, aftershave balms, and unrefined Shea butter may not get here until Friday (forgot about no mail on Monday) and we are expected to return to normal which means below freezing Thursday night and Friday and possibly snow.

Anyone have experience with this. I wouldn't think the shaving soaps would be okay but would think the ASB could freeze.  Not sure about the Shea butter.  They would have to sit outside until I get home from work.

I am more worried about stuff in the heat of summer.

Cold is fine except, and this might be baseless worrying, I think hardware need to come up to room temperature. I got a vintage brush one winter. The handle was marble. It was a set with a soap dish. Rooney I think. Nothing at all special. A little boar brush. The thing shattered when I ran it under water. Not even hot water.

Most stuff I don't think the cold matters. I'm with you on the extremes though. I try to avoid the dead of winter and the dog days of summer too.

I live in Los Angeles. A few years ago as normal we had several days with 100 plus degrees. I ordered several tubs of Tabula Rasa. When I received it it was completely liquified. Luckily I thought to put in in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes and it came back to life. I talked to my mail carrier and he told me if it is about 95 degrees out it get to be about 115 in the truck. Need I say more? In order to combat this I have two alternatives. Don't order when you know the temperatures will be extreme. If you must have it do the following. Go on line with the Post Office (PO) set up an account and when you have to make an order and the temp is critical go on line and have the PO hold you mail. Priority mail is transported in the evening when the temp is normal. When it gets to your PO it will be held in an air conditioned building. If your shipment is by FedEx or UPS and there is a distribution center near you, you can contact them and have them hold it there until you pick it up. I always do that when I order brushes from Europe. I saw a thread once where an individual purchased a used brush from some who apparently rinsed the brush and did not dry it properly before he shipped it. It was in Michigan in the winter and the brush froze and cracked where the knot went into the handle. Moral of the story plan ahead.

Hi Wolverine , I have lots of experience with freezing temperatures. I have had no problems with soaps or creams exposed to extreme cold. Alcohol based aftershaves again pose no problem. Balms in plastic bottles/tubes haven't been a problem either although they will freeze solid - you may get some leakage due to the expansion. I did have a problem with Myersol Emulsion - its in glass so it froze solid and shattered the bottle into lots of shards, a real mess. I also learned not to order hot sauce in the winter. Same issue as the Myersol. It can get warm in the summer here, not LA warm but in mailboxes or the back of a postal van it can get pretty hot so I try to buy stuff that might be temperature sensitive, either cold or hot in the spring and fall. As an aside, I haven't had any freezing issues with Chatillon Lux toners which have almost no alcohol in them - Shawn can correct me on that point but while the toners do thicken up and the lanolin condenses I've never seen them freeze and they mix up smoothly again once warmed up to room temp.

We agree 100000% on this lol. Soap in hot temperatures is not good though IMO. Some of them turn into liquid, but a stint in the fridge usually cures that. I just stir them up really well beforehand. I don't buy soap anymore though since I have enough to last me for the next 15-20 years.

Well if she visits the bird room with the stash you might see her hot but not sure that's the type of hot you want to see.

She keeps wondering why I buy so many toothbrush holders when I have only one toothbrush. She thinks I'm looney.

I had one bottle of AS explode in my house. It smelled good though, It was a cold winter day -30 Celsius, when it warmed up the bottle exploded, I got hit with a piece of glass 8 feet away. lesson learned avoid super cold temperatures, if its cold open cap on it as it warms up to off gas. Soaps I've had no problem with other than a courier cracking the lid on a container likely because it was cold
