I'm a little disappointed today. If you recall from above, I was very pleased with the Fine Bay Rum aftershave released last year.  A solid, classic bay rum.  I was looking forward with some anticipation to its release in shaving soap form which happened later last year.  I was waiting for it to come to Top of The Chain, Carmine had told me he would have it but it hasn't showed up so far.  Supply chain problems.  So I bit the bullet and ordered it from Fine in the US and paid shipping - I even ordered two tubs because I thought I knew what it would smell like from their aftershave - no risk right?  I was going to give one tub to my daughter's boyfriend.  It arrived a couple of weeks ago and I got around to using it today.  The base is ok - it's not a tier 1 top 5 soap but it's decent enough.  The scent off the tub (I'm not calling these soft soaps "pucks" anymore) was very mild and I figured it should open up on lathering.  Wrong.  It's virtually an unscented soap.  That really annoys me.  Maybe they had problems translating their bay rum from splash to soap, I don't know and honestly, I don't care.  It shouldn't have been released until they got it right.  I dont know what I'm going to do with two tubs of unscented soap, one new in box and one scooped once but I'm sure not giving it to my daughter's BF as an example of bay rum.  Maybe I'll pull the label off and tell him it's unscented. Still, props to Fine for the decent bay rum splash but the soap?  Seriously?? Thumbs down.   Maybe it's the universe balancing out - we got an awesome bay rum (soap and post shave) recently from Ethos so to keep things in balance someone had to put out a flop.

There may be a cure for the soap scent.  First question is the soap very soft?  If so I can probably send you some Natural  Bay Rum Aroma Blend and I can instruct you how to melt the soap and add the Aroma blend. Or if you want I can do it for you if you want to ship them to me.

Just a suggestion.

An thank you for the encouraging words.

Frank, thank you for the offer but it’s not that great a base that I’d want to go to that much trouble to try to save it. It is a very soft soap. Seriously, this is why I so appreciate the time and effort you out in to creating your bay rum. It’s very well executed and it’s a unique creation while still remaining a true bay rum. That’s not easy. So much appreciated.

Thank you for the encouraging words on the Bay Rum. It was a fun project.

I understand not wanting to try and fix the Fine Shave  soap if the performance is not to your liking. I’ve been there more than a few times in my 20+ years of being in he hobby of traditional wet shaving.

Yup, the continuing triumph of hope over experience.

Has anyone tried Barberry Coast’s bay rum? If so, is it more of a traditional scent or an updated version? Also, how does it smell compared to captain’s choice?

I’m wearing it now. It’s updated I’d say, a little sweeter smelling than the classic. I like it a lot.

Thanks Marko. I’ve been wondering about that since I’m looking more for a traditional scent.
