That's odd.  I experienced no similarities to Fougère Gothique either dry or lathered in practice, nor do I see any on paper.  Maybe it's the lichen element that you picked up from the tub.  That note is like a hybrid of moss and mushroom. Glad you ended up liking the lathered product, regardless. To my nose, Eigengrau was as-advertised.  It's definitely an icy clean air essence (I have no idea how they pull that off) that's sweetened by the iris but on a muted level. It's difficult to ascertain when the cold air ends and the slightly camphorous crushed fir needle takes over. It's all grounded in a dry clean earthiness with subtle muskiness.  This fragrance smells like a real place.  It's so frigid in its characteristics, I expected to feel a chilling effect à la Terror, but there was none.  That said, Eigengrau is in good company with Terror and First Snow.

The last element to fall away is the iris, but I would never call this one a floral.  By the nature of the fragrance and medium (balm), I lose track of it after about 90 minutes.

Thanks 120inna55 - describing scents is incredibly hard and you are very good at it.

I appreciate the compliment, ALI .  Here's a more polished version that I will post publicly later next week:

Quote:Eigengrau is as-advertised.  It opens with a decidedly accurate icy, clean air essence that's immediately sweetened by iris but on a muted level. It's difficult to ascertain when the frigid air ends and the slightly camphorous fir needle takes over. The cold air narrows the dynamic of the fir in much the same way actual cold air numbs one's olfactories such that there's not much green or woods accompanying the fir needle. It's all grounded in a dry clean earthiness with subtle muskiness.  This fragrance smells like a real place.  It's so frigid in its characteristics, I expect to feel a chilling effect à la Terror, but there is none.  It's quite mysterious in that respect. That said, Eigengrau is in good company with Barrister and Mann's Terror and First Snow. The last element to fall away is the iris, but I hesitate to call this one a floral.  By the nature of the fragrance and the balm medium, I lose track of it after about 90 minutes.

Yep, I even smelled them side by side before using to be sure. There is something that ties them together, albeit loosely.

I just saw a collaboration soap between Barrister and Mann and Zingari Man on Top of The Chain. It’s an autumn scented soap which is strange given we’re in the dead of winter. There’s no information on whose soap base or whose scent is used. I didn’t think I’d ever see Barrister and Mann collaborating with anyone because, why? If you’ve got the base and the scents you’ve got the whole package. I did have a fantasy that maybe Will and Shawn Maher of Chatillon Lux would one day collaborate. Imagine Yuzu Rose Patchouli in an excelsior or Softheart base?  Dare to dream

It's Zingari's updated vegan base with the same scent as the original Nocturne by Barrister and Mann. I think Heather approached Will about the collab and he accepted. It came out a while ago, but maybe it just now made it's way up to TotC.

Thanks Jeff, I'm in a backwater up here on the frozen tundra so news does take a while to make it way to me.  I'd still like to see YRP in Softheart.

Will finally got around to doing a tobacco scent with Full Measure of a Man releasing today as well as Rhapsody in Softheart.  I reckon I'll be getting those when they make it to my neck of the woods.  A bit of light in the midst of this winter of darkness.  Happy2

I will buy a sample (if avail.), but to be frank I am a little burned out on tobacco scent as A&E has gone "hog wild" with that genre recently.  Confused

I hear you BPman , I’ve stayed away from tobacco since the DG MOTI so I’ll probably try this one. Will usually has an interesting twist
