To my knowledge, I'd never smelled Gillette's Sun Up Cologne, although the fragrance is familiar. When Barrister_N_Mann released the Reserve aftershaves, "Classic" (Sun Up clone) was easily my favorite. I soon became obsessed with obtaining a vintage bottle of the original stuff. I received a full bottle of the vintage stuff today. I can say that despite the years, this stuff smells exactly like Barrister's Reserve Classic (or I should say Classic smells like Sun Up). I love the cute bottle. The font and even the shape of the bottle scream '60s. Very cool indeed!

Does the new Bay Rum aftershave smell anything like the Kyovu Bay Rum? I liked the Kyovu but was a bit much on the clove/spice.

There is no clove in our bay rum, but the fragrance very similar, yes. However, we're now incorporating rum into the base as well (which we do with the soap, but had not done with Kyovu), so it's a little less spicy than it once was.

Enjoying my sample of cool reserve soap and aftershave. Top notch performance.

Would any one care to comment on the scent of classic? Would you describe it as a bright scent?

Thanks!

Here's an excerpt from my observations in the past:

Quote:...As you probably know, it's intended to reproduce the vintage Gillette "Sun Up"...It's largely medicinal at first, and then transitions to a bitter citrus. The dry-down is a little powdery with maybe some sandalwood and lavender, but it's anything but feminine. My assumption is that it's going to be polarizing: some will be repulsed while others will enjoy it. Some will appreciate it simply for its vintage connection. I actually enjoy it, particularly with respect to the dry-down. It's a clean scent....

After having enjoyed this fragrance immensely, I set out to obtain an unopened bottle of the vintage Sun Up Cologne. After having used the combo several times, I can comfortably say the Reserve splash is a near-perfect clone of the vintage cologne.

Classic has, to me, a bit of a tangerine/ylang-ylang note that is pretty sweet, powdery and floral. It balances against some oakmoss/sandalwood that is drier, woody and also powdery. Overall a solid scent if you're a fan of things in the oakmoss-heavy end of the spectrum for scents.

I think I prefer Cool, personally because it has a "cleaner" scent with the lavender/lemon/bergamot that are a little sharper, crisper and better defined. I only wish it weren't quite so "dry."

I just got Cool in the soap and Classic in the aftershave, and they are both great. The scents I find to be subtle, but both have that powdery element. To be perfectly honest, after shaving with Reserve I felt like I didn't need any aftershave. It's that good. I've been a fan of B&M for a while, and have Black Label, White Label, Latha Original, and Glissant, but this may be the best. The last thing in the world I need is more soap, but I may have to get some of the aftershave in Spice.

spice is nice. I personally find myself wearing cool more though (judging by the amount gone in my bottles)...

I'd love to buy an unscented version of the Reserve splash as I shave my head and lower neck before going to bed every few days. I also think reserve does a better job than the cool fix, tend skin, bump stopper, etc..
