Curious if anyone goes back to the soap tub with their brush after the first pass if they’re face lathering? For a lot of my brushes, they hold onto so much lather that I have to squeeze it out for the consecutive passes, and when I do that it never goes on as well as that first lather. Tried going back to the tub today for a second and third pass and it went well. Plus I have too much soap to worry about wasting any. Is this a trade secret a few of you are doing?

I have never done this, except when I first started using boar brushes, many years ago, but I usually get enough soap loaded into my brushes for three passes and most of my knots are 32mm +. As you have mentioned, I don't think anyone gets similar lather in their subsequent passes compared to their first.
If going back to the puck works for you, then keep at it as there is no universally correct way to lather.   Happy2

I'm not afraid to go back and will if needed but I load heavy from the get go and seldom need to return to the tub. Yes, I'm a face latherer.

Yes, I have gone back to the puck for subsequent passes. I am still fairly new to this and I was initially reluctant to go back for more soap. Linear bias? Dunno. Well, for whatever reason, I had to get past the idea that going back for more soap was somehow less than ideal. Like you mentioned, I reminded myself that soap is plentiful, and zi told myself that this wet shaving ritual allows me to take a little time and savor the experience. So now, if I feel like it, I’ll load some more. If I don’t, I won’t. For me, a “no rules” approach makes the experience more enjoyable. Happy shaves to you!

Always wondered what goes on in our minds that somehow makes loading more soap forbidden. Maybe YouTube videos? At any rate, mine are 3 pass shaves and when I choose a smaller knot for the day I either have to opt for a two pass o4 return to the puck. Usually it’s return to the puck for a refresh. That said, I generally use larger knots where that is unnecessary.

If you are using a brush with a larger diameter, lets say 24mm and up, you can probably complete your shave using the lather generated for the 1st pass. However, if you are using a smaller brush, especially a "travel brush" ,it may not hold sufficient lather. Also, the amount of soap needed depends on how many passes you are planning. I bowl lather and generated enough for five passes: WTG, XTG, WTG, clean-up pass and then a "bonus" lather to enhance the post-shave feel if using a high quality soap. Thus, I make more lather than the average shaver might. If you are doing a one-pass or two-pass shave, you won't need nearly as much lather.

I use primarily 24-26mm knots. I have enough lather for all 3 passes, but the 2nd and 3rd lather are always a little thinner than the 1st. If I go back to the tub for a few swirls it makes it so all of the lathers are equal. Bowl lathering you get the same consistency each lather.
