Alum bars

What is the typical life expectancy for an alum bar? And why are all alum bars not created equal? BTW I love my razorock alum bar for the simple fact that it's efficient and comes in its own storage case; not to mention I read it was one of the better choices in alum bars. So when I was browsing alum bars it came down to Osma and Razo. Osma came in a two pack, but in wax boxes like a soap. Razo had the hard plastic case. In my line of thought, how long would I use 1 bar before needing a second one? How would I store the bar? (since I was told it must remain dry and free of moisture in the environment)

I took the gamble and it seemed to pay off. With limited use of the alum bar for an aftershave, I would venture to guess a very long life expectancy. So for a little more money I got the convenience of a good size bar, recommendation of a high quality alum bar, storage case, and a good after shave.

I like your post, and i had some of the same questions about alum bars.I didn't know they were different, so it looks like i bought a sub par block. I found with my purchase the plastic case is flimsy and wont stay shut. The alum seemed to work, i mean when i wet and rubbed that thing over my face for my first couple of shaves (being new to wet shaving) it felt like alcohol in and open wound, burning pain for a minute and then my skin tightened up. What exactly is different between brands of bars?

I'd imagine it would last for at least a year or more.

I have an Osma bar and it isnt going anywhere soon. I wet the bar and rub it over wet face. Let it sit for a bit then wash off. Rinse and dry the bar and put up for next time. There is some feedback from the bar, I've never had a huge burn from it. I would say it is a good indicator of how aggressive you have been with your shave.
