Posting Freak
I just found this thread and thought I'd post my experience with M vs R plates with the ATT.  I bought the ATT razor in January 2016 and in March I posted the following:

I acquired a ATT R2 Atlas earlier this year and found it to be very aggressive, a little too aggressive for my taste. I considered exchanging the base plate for the M2 but decided what the hay, just buy another baseplate. The M2 arrived yesterday and for me, its an improvement in comfort and still provides a BBS shave. Maybe one day I'll graduate to the R2 or maybe I'll post it in the BST.

I went the better part of a year without using the ATT and then picked it up again last week and then posted the following on Feb.14:

I figured I'd update this post - so, I had not used my ATT M2 open comb razor since last winter because I had found that even with the switch to the M2 (mild) baseplate from the R2 (regular) the razor was still too aggressive for me. I've been shaving with safety razors for about 4 years now and I thought last winter that my technique was dialled in. In any case, I picked up the razor yesterday and loaded it with a Rapira Platinum Lux blade, which I find to be a very comfortable blade generally, and set off to give the ATT another chance. Well, I think that either through an improvement in technique, an ideal blade, alignment of the stars or a combination of all of those things, I found the razor to be a little less harrowing to use. Its still aggressive but I'm getting a BBS shave without any nicks or irritation whatsoever. Make no mistake, I know its a very close shave when I'm done but its still comfortable. I'm glad I held on to this razor and gave it another chance, we all deserve a second chance don't we?

The bottom line is that the ATT (at least in SS) is a great razor, very efficient and for me very aggressive.  The M2 plate is good for me, the R2 is much too aggressive and I can only imagine what the H2 plate would be like.  If I were advising someone looking to buy a ATT razor on the question of M vs R plate I guess my question would be how aggressive a razor do they like?  If you know you prefer very aggressive razors, you're better off with the R2.  You'd probably be ok with the M2 as well but you may want more aggressiveness.  I like razors like the Ikon 102 and the Feather AS-D2 as my daily shavers and on the Rockwell 6s I'm a 2 or a 3 plate guy.  These are all efficient but mild razors so if you find those too mild for you, go for the R plate or even the H.
