Above the Tie: Calypso M1

I ordered the ATT Calypso M1 over the weekend. It was a tough choice between the M1 and R1. Since I quite like the Edwin Jagger EJ89 and read the M1 is a touch more aggressive I think the M1 was the way to go. I also use the ATT S1 which is very smooth and read that the R1 does have more blade feel than the S1, but both provide similar closeness. I dont think I would like more blade feel than what the S1 or EJ89 offer.

On the other hand I tried the AS-D2 razor and it was just too mild to mow down hair. So I sure hope it not too mild either.

It's already shipped out and I'm stoked to give a try later this week. Anyone else have experience with the M1 and/or R1?

I had the Calypso R1 for a while, got it when it first came out. I liked it quite a bit, just not enough to keep it. My best shaves with it were when I shimmed it with 1--3 shims. On its own, I found it to be a bit too mild for my taste.

At the time, they only had the M1 and R1. I might try the H1 at some point, or one of the new Calypso heads that are coming out soon.

The Calypso line has some nice razors. (I currently have the SE1.) Very light in weight, which may trick one to thinking that extra pressure needs to be applied. As we all know, pressure often leads to problems. It’s better to just focus on finding the optimal blade and angle.

Keep us posted on how you like the M1.

So right now, Above the Tie is working on aluminum open comb base plates. On April 16, Stan said that the Calypso open comb razors should be available in about 6–8 business days. That means they could potentially be released today, but of course, delays sometimes happen.

If I recall correctly, after the open combs, Above the Tie will be working on bringing the slants into the Calypso lineup.

It looks like Stan & company have been taking pictures of the new Calypso heads today (Wednesday), and will probably enter them on the site during Thursday. There was a picture or two on either Facebook or Instagram (can’t remember which), and the open comb Calypsos look very cool.

The stainless ones have their fans, but there are also those who say that the teeth on the comb are overly sharp. It’s difficult to say, based on a couple of photos, if that will be the case with the Calypso open comb heads, as well. To me, they look just like their stainless counterparts.

Thanks again for the update news! I agree that the teeth on the stainless open comb can be a little tuff on my face if I use it Daily. I own the R2. I also am very happy Stan made the aluminum Calypso razors. Smart move on his part since a lot more customers can afford to buy his great quality razors at a good and reasonable price. I'm looking forward to purchasing the R1 & R2 Calypso heads and hope the Calypso R2 is smoother than the stainless R2. I think Stan is also working on a Calypso slant.
