So everybody has different opinions about pre shave oil. I use it, but a little differently...

I like to apply a very small amount of pre shave oil before my hot towel routine. I find that it helps soften my beard.
By the time I'm done with the hot towel, the oil is pretty much gone/steamed out. This routine has been very helpful.
I have a very coarse, dense beard, fwiw.
I realized later that I essentially replicated The Oil Cleansing Method without realizing it.
Does anyone else do this?

I use homemade oil:
sweet almond oil with a LITTLE BIT of castor oil
or
sunflower oil with a LITTLE BIT of castor oil

I am not a wet shaving expert, YMMV, but this helps me.

Here's the full preshave routine lately:

Very small amount of oil -> Hot Towel 2 min. -> Then shower and face wash with good artisan soap

Yes, I have a mix of oils that are used as a Oil Cleansing Method face ash and sometimes, I will use that as a pre shave oil.

But I find I prefer to use this mix the night before my shave and then shower the next day and do not do anything other than wet my face with warm water before starting the shave.
