You should probably find a cool guy that you work with and try one of his brushes.

Well, I have this one cool friend at work who probably has 30 brushes. Several new ones that he got from a place I turned him on to. Maybe he will give me one. It is my birthday tomorrow. :-)

My experience with badger knots is extremely limited, but I thought I'd throw this out there… A while ago, I tried a silvertip (3-band) Thäter for a while. Pure pillowy luxury.

Then, immediately after, I got a 24 mm Whipped Dog 2-band (Larry calls them "high mountain"). Curved tips that tend to gel slightly, and almost the same pillowy luxury as the Thäter, with a little more backbone. Wasn't expecting this much from a <$30 knot.

With real animal hair, I guess you just never know. But I suppose that when you deal with so-called high end manufacturers, in part you are paying for the highest possible chance of consistency (with said real animal hair). Good luck with the quest!

What makes you believe that?

By using both Thater and Shavemac knots more specific the Silvertip 2-Band. The hair feels and performs the exact same way and very similar characteristics. Also seeing how Shavemac and Thater have very similar handles across their lines I'm going to assume one supplies the other with handles and knots.
On an eternal den clearing mission at this point.

Ok. So it is basically a complete speculation on your end with zero data, but just your personal observation from trying a few knots. I just wanted to clarify that.

Now some data:
shavemac exists for about 20 years, Heinrich L Thäter makes brushes since 1913.
The shavemac silvertip 2 band knots are sold for about three years. Prior to that shavemac only offered a D01 2 Band knot (still sold) that feels much more like Simpson Manchurian hair. Thäter sells 2 band knots for at least 8 (?) years (I do not have earlier records), always with the same consistency of truly very soft tips.

The shavemac silvertip 2 band went through a few iterations and as a knot does not have much resemblance to a Thäter 2 band --- or as much as a TGN Finest, Elite Manchurian or other 2 band knot of reasonable quality.

Regarding the handles: indeed, it is a broader assumption - though not known for sure - that shavemac makes the handles for Thäter.

I love my Thater 3 band. Not for face lathering though. Hence why I am looking for a new brush. :-)

Here is a little writeup I enjoyed reading a while back. It is an interview with Thater and in one of the questions and answers, they confirm they don't make handles in house.

To the OP, I would agree with many of the points made in this video about 2 banded knot shapes and construction.

Personally, I prefer 2 band hair to be made into a fan but that doesn't mean I don't like or don't think 2 band bulbs don't work. I simply prefer silver tip 3 bands now.

If you're asking what they said, it just makes mention to them sourcing them locally.

Sorry, my fault...

QED is Latin - Quad Erat Demonstrandum - meaning your post proved my point.

Thäter is sourcing their own hair and make knots in-house, while sourcing handles locally. That handle source may very well be shavemac.
