and that's fine...if people find the prices on ebay worthwhile, they'll pay it for instant access to a wolfman razor.

Andrew, think you are presuming there is a normalized functioning market.  Suspect the market has been severely impacted even if unintentionally.

James has helped bolster the high prices on the bsts on forums, ebay and such for a long time by a) not increasing his supply to meet demand and b) not raising his prices to help shrink some of the demand.

Yet purportedly, from those in business deals, he is disinterested in the speculative market that has developed....

I tend to agree with you. Even now at $400 US with a stand is not totally out of line with some of the other premium offerings. I was fortunate enough to get a SS OC standard gap with handle and a Ti OC head with an increased gap before all the craze got so out of hand. Even though I enjoy both the prices that the razors command used have tempted me in the past.

What I think some people don't get is how long it takes to make just one razor in the fashion that James does. I had a very long discussion with Brian from Charcoal the other day and we were talking manufacturing. First off I'll say he has deep admiration for James and his work. He told me that James hand polishes every single razor that comes out of his shop and as Brian explained that would take probably a full day with no distractions. Brian told me he can't even do one hand polishing because of a hand issue so he said I don't know how the guy does it! I also know roughly the price it cost to make a razor like a Wolfman or CG razor and those that lets say compare their process to Timeless for example. Well there is no comparison. I can't say how much the machinery that James is using costs but I can tell you that what one machine that Timeless uses cost more than 10 times the cost of what Brain is using so understand they cannot produce razors in mass numbers. Don't you think it frustrates them that they can't keep up with demand? I know it does to Brain and I'm sure James as well but I'm pretty sure James and I know Brian is not going to compromise their quality standards to pump out more razors. So If you want one of James razors it's knowing that going in that there will be a waiting time for you to get one. Those that don't want to wait will find other razors to buy which is understood . Also James price increase also may be influenced by COG's as they very rarely go down. An sometimes manufactures will eat the price increase for a while but eventually they have to raise them to cover their costs and still make some kind of profit. That is just one of the reasons I have no problem with James raising his prices. An I looked at it today and the $500 does include a stand so if you live in the US that's right around $400 for head, handle, stand and finish of your choice brushed or polished so for me it's a fair price to pay for that kind of quality.
