Toothpaste comes in many flavors, but for a clean feeling mouth, give me mint every time. Shaving works the same way. My soap stash harbors representatives of over twenty fragrance families from roses to rum to flowers and weeds. They’re all a delight to use, and I really enjoy the variety. But when I want a clean shave, I reach for a fougère. Even after trying hundreds of soaps, to me a fougère is what classic double-edged shaving should smell like.

Bouki-meister: what our where does this fit in the green family tree? Do you have a good analogy? Thx in advance
TommyCarioca. This is a very bright fougère. Somehow Will pours a little liquid sunshine into the mix. It's not really a citrusy brightness, although I do pick up some bergamot. It's more an aldehydic bright. That's to say, it seems like an aromachemical, but in a good way. I'm not sure how to put this, but to me it feels like something you'd meet in a 1960s drugstore or barbershop. It's not very complex, and it could use some more moss and tonka, but for a shaving soap, it's very nice. The lavender in it smells a lot like the Barrister's Reserve Lavender. Among my soaps, its closest relative is probably Le Père Lucien's Cologne-FougèreIf I didn't have so many others soaps peeping at me like little chicks, I could happily get lost in this soap for weeks at a time.

Somebody help me out here. What does this soap smell like to you?

West Indian Limes Cream v. (Truefitt & Hill) musky lime

I have to confess, this cream smells a lot like an executive washroom. It’s elegant, fresh, a little spicy, and it reminds me of a recently cleaned toilet. It’s going to take some time to shake these associations. But that's only one way of looking at it. Other reviewers say West Indian Limes smells like jelly beans. I can see that, too. It has its sweet moments. But I’m also picking up a dash of spice and musk (maybe that's where I'm getting the animalic vibe). I should mention that this fragrance has been around since 1870, long before household cleaners started smelling like citrus bombs. I’m sure that back in its day, West Indian Limes must have been dandy.

Hey Zac, I usually do try to pair the AS, but I'm not sure Tabac has any peers (other than their own products, which do not own). I actually just went with some Aqua Velva (Williams, made in Spain, I believe).
Sorry, probably not the answer you were looking for!

I absolutely agree, very bright.
However it does lose some of the edge (in a good way) after a couple years and the mossy lavender come through a bit more as the brightness fades a little.

Bouki thanks - sounds like it is a worthy contender for fougere rotation

Bouki, I’ll add an impression, if I may. I have a sample of the West Indian Limes aftershave balm, and though it’s not a very natural lime scent to me, I much enjoy it. It instantly smelled very familiar, but it took me a while to remember what the association was. Well, the scent is similar to the moist towelettes that were handed out by some airlines when I was a young frequent flyer. Since I enjoy those memories, the scent association is a pleasant one.
