Oud-Santal t. (Le Père Lucien) ★★★★ aloeswood & sandalwood

Still fussing over the way this soap doesn't melt, I popped a knob in my homemade scuttle and filled the bottom with boiling water. I thought the high temperature would soften the waxy bits and lead to a superior emulsion. In fifteen minutes the soap had indeed softened, but even after some serious lather building, it still didn't melt into the suds entirely. This is some surprising stuff.

Not much luck getting a slick leather. Serious dissipation - twas voluminous. Just can't dial this in. Now relegated to uber lathers only. [Image: 26575407d3bc2759b49041bca4ebe001.jpg]

A hot scuttle and a stiff boar brush were still not enough to melt the waxy globs in today's lather. I don't know what they are, but I suspect they're clumps of unrefined Shea butter. Yes, the lather gives a good shave, but the gritty texture is annoying; and all the fussing and fiddling and whipping it takes to make a smooth emulsion makes me hesitate to recommend Oud-Santal. If you're looking for an oud-scented soap that makes a quick, satisfying lather with an excellent finish, just get Saponificio Varesino's Tundra Artica.
